My exhaust pipe comes out in front of the rear wheel. The CATS gone and I'm using a walker muffler. It sounds great at a low rpm but when I excel up a hill or from the start it sounds like a vacume cleaner (whistle sound). If I removed the muffler and put in a straight pipe would this be to loud coming out in front of the rear wheel?

I have never heard one with a straight pipe that short, but I would bet that it would make the whistle louder and higher pitched. I run a full length straight pipe and it is fairly loud already, I would not cut it any shorter. The only way to get rid if the vaccuum cleaner sound is to take the turbo off or get a couple of good mufflers on it and hope.

Briar Hopper's Twin exhaust

Check out Briar Hopper's late model black 1-ton. He's got a twin pipe set-up, exiting just before the rear wheel. I've seen pictures here on the TDR and if you look in the archives for his posts, you'll see what I mean.

I think it would sound worse. I ran mine for a month dumping at the rear of the cab (just disconnected the exhaust at the cat). Sounded cool and really loud at the right rpm, or when I was on it, but most of the time sounded like arse. I couldn't stand it rattling my back window.

mine exits in front of the duals and sounds good to me when runnin thru the gears. I use a Dynomax Race Magnum (straight thru), I think maybe your muffler might not be giving you the sound you want. Mine kinda sounds like a loaded dump truck, deep throaty, I do get the whistle since the silencer ring was an unchecked option on mine :)

take a look at the "removed my silencer ring and fuel economy suffers" thread on the engine drive train section. good pix of a straight pipe setup with dual 3" slash cuts in front of the curbside duals--MCummings, i think... ... .

Side Exhaust

Boy, things sure happen fast here at TDR.

I went on vacation for only 24 Hours and it's like a completely new place,,, information EVERYWHERE!! :) lol

My Truck has a really bad "drone" in the cab with the windows up, and radio off.

After changing my exhaust, I seem to drive with the windows down ALL the time, unless I'm over 60-70MPH, then the wind gets ferocious.

Maybe it's my camper making it drone, I'll have to take it off one day and let yall know.

I do know that the only whistle I have coming from my truck is from the turbo, and that's only during de-celeration, under power, or cruising, the engine exhust noise overpowers the turbo noise. At idle I have alot of turbo whistle, and it sounds way cool.

I get ALOT of comments about how my truck sounds just like a Big Rig, or one of the Pikes Peak "racing big rigs".

I am going to put some type of "switchable" muffler on my truck, One muffler for highway (passengers), and straight pipe for 100% of the other time.

I absolutley love my setup, but at times, when I'm really pushing the "go-pedal" into the radiator, I can hear one of the Rear Q. C. windows rattle. It is a slight rattle, but for my truck being as "tight" as it is, it has to be purty darn loud.

P. S. The "drone" dissapears at speeds over 78-79 MPH
