I have this ticking sound toward the back of my engine(not the lift pump tick; I have that too). I thought I was going to solve the problem when I found the #6 manifold bolts loose. Top one about 1/4 turn and bottom one about 1/2 to 3/4 turn. No change in ticking. Could the gasket have been ruined if it was only that loose and tightening up won't help or should I just say "they are torqued right now and that probably wasn't my problem?

When is the last time that you adjusted the valves?

Generally if the gasket is bad, there will be soot around it, unless it is to dirty from soot when it was loose. Then you may not notice.

Exhaust Leak

My exhaust manifold gasket is getting black at the #1 cylinder and i tried to tighten the manifold bolts but they will not budge, time for a ATS 3-piece manifold!! I guess.

The gaskets are made of metal so it probably would not hurt it if it loosened up.

I have a slight tick too I have given up on trying to find. If I hold a big screwdriver to my ear and put the end down by # 1 injector it's loudest.
