I have been warned by a few reliable sources that installing the ATS exhaust manifold is not a job to do yourself, but I have noticed that many of you seem to have done it. I'd appreciated any opinions or advice on the subject so I can plan my next move. Thanks.

Who said that??? That is the easiest thing I have done in awhile!!. All you gotta do is put the 3 pieces together with VERY LIGHT tapping with a hammer, real tight fit, but you don't have hammer real hard. Line all the holes up against the old manifold. Put it together before you install it! Took 30 minutes including a turbo housing replacement. Just use new gaskets and check the bolt torque several times like every week. It makes a huge difference in performance and EGT's.

Where are you located? I freeze the outer ends and heat the center. Use your old manifold as a jig to line up the bolt holes.

ats manifold

rweis has a pretty good post on this installation if you want to look around a bit. I just installed one on my 98. 5, the only problem I had was... the holes for mounting the turbo studs weren't drilled all the way thru. This caused the stock studs to be too long and I had to put a couple washers as spacers in order to tighten up the nuts. Had I know this at the beginning I would have bought some shorter studs, it would make for a better and easier installation.

Like rweis, I replaced the manifold bolts with studs and lock nuts. The parts run around $30. 00 and are well worth the investment. With this information, your installation will be a piece of cake...

With stock turbo, I pull out the studs out of exhaust housing put them in the ATS all 4 studs are in the manifold. drill out the treads in the exhaust housing, 2 studs out of stock manifold and 2 from turbo.

Installing the ATS wasn't all that bad.

I put the outer ends in the freezer, and just set the center section on a spare tire that was sitting out in direct sunlight. A few good wacks with a rubber mallet did the trick.

Don't forget to anti-sieve the snot out of where the pieces slide together.

Greg... 10x1. 5x47... . 35lbs torque. Since my installation I've only driven 600 or 700 miles and haven't as yet checked to see if they've loosened up, which, from my reading, seems to be a problem. If you want some extended information go to 'search' and type in "rweis" and you find a whole lot written up on this. Some advocate using double washers as a deterrent to the nuts loosening up. Like I say, I haven't had a chance to get out there and check, and won't be able to do so for a few weeks until my new knee heals up.

Good luck!

I used double washers (NL-4 PAIR 3/8" ID Vibration Proof Washers) from Reid Tool when I installed my ported manifold last year. The nuts never did loosen up.
