I have a 4" muffler back system, I am going to bag it for something better & possibly a bit louder. Browsing I came across a 4" SS magnaflow system for $380, was about to get it and then came across a $375 - 5" aluminized system that has a 4" downpipe then goes 5" 2 feet down to a 5" muffler and out. The magnaflow has a 3. 5" dowpipe, then goes 4" the rest of the way, but it is stainless. Both are mandrel bent. Which would you choose? Whould the 5" have better performance? Im pretty sure it would be louder too correct?

Rumor has it that the 5 inch won't gain you any performance but if you like things loud then it may be good for you. I like 304 stainless systems because they last longer than the truck will and I plan on having it for a while, you won't find a 5 inch system in stainless. If you want loud and obnoxious why not go for straight piped stacks? i haven't heard a 5 inch system myself but my 4 inch 304 stainless Hog system with a straight through muffler sounds sweet from the outside, a little noisy in the cab but not too much.

I did the magnaflow, its great, but if your looking for loud its not. It is louder than stock, but what you hear mostly is the turbo. You can get a muffler elimination pipe from magnaflow, that may give you the noise you want. I agree with Turbo Tim also, go with the stainless, especially at that price.

soooooo i ordered the magnaflow. i've got a question for you CTD gurus... .

how can i remove the stock system intact... w/o taking a sawzall to it? do i take it for a long ride... warm it up, loosen all the bolts and get my mechanix gloves on and start to twist? I've also got a propane torch i can heat the joints up with, but will i do something stupid if i take flam to my truck's exhaust? like blow my wife's source of disposable income (me) sky-high?

thanks

p. s. how long will the install take? my way? sawzall way? is getting the down tube off/on hard? do the downtube from the top or bottom?

just installed the magnaflow, took less than an hour. and you can have my stock exhaust, rust and all. i didnt cut a thing. it is very queit though

Americana,

I wouldn't bother saving your old exhaust, even if you can get it off without cutting. I ended up having to take the torch to mine to get it apart at the sleeves, and some of the hangers as well. The only reason to save it is if you want to transfer the exhaust to another truck later, and with how long our trucks last, it won't fit what you get later.

Have you seen just the downpipe being sold anywhere - I have a 4" muffler and the piping back just need a bigger downpipe - prefer 3. 5" or 4" ----- Anyone?

btowler... you're probably right, but i always try to save the stock parts. just cleaned out (threw out) the stock suspension parts from my '65 mustang restoration 20 years ago. . and i sold the car 2 years ago!

rmarrison... pm me and i'll give you the phone number. be aware i am on the road and may take a while to get back to you. i saw the system on ebay and contacted the person and did the purchase over the phone as i bought the afe proguard 7 as well and wanted to make sure i was getting what i thought i was getting.
