There is lots of info available in the TDR world documenting the ACTUAL benefits of 3" vs 4" exhaust on 360 cubic inches turning less than 3000 rpm. The last I remember was a Joe Donelly report in late '03 - dyno test on a 380 hp engine with a stock exhaust. A 4" system produced a whopping 7 hp! Puts the investment in the same category as K&N-like airfilters.

Yeah, I was a non-believer and just had to have 4" on my 2nd gen. Zero to 60 suffered with my DTT mods due to spoolup lag, and the dreaded drone was too much noise. A mandel bent 3" system similar to a bracket racer restored the peace and quiet and off-idle throttle response. $ was much better left in the bank, IMHO.

Muffler replacement, only?

Has anyone replaced the muffler, only? I was thinking of installing a 24" Magnaflow, 4" straight-through. The biggest problem I see is that the stock muffler has approximately a 5-1/2" offset. In the front, the inlet is on the low side of the muffler. On the back, the outlet is on the high side of the muffler. It seems that , on the back side, you need a 4" pipe with a "jog" in it to take up the 5-1/2" difference. I have not been able to find a stainless or aluminized pipe with this kind of "jog" in it. I've checked exhaust (muffler) shops throughout the Phoenix area and no one knows where to get a piece, like this. This piece would probably need to be about 15" long and could be cut to fit. I wonder if you could just bend all the pieces up towards the back and weld it in place? Some people here seem to think that the 3-1/2 pipe is more than adequate, if you don't get to creative with your horsepower needs. If so, this would be an inexpensive way to get a free flowing exhaust system. Any suggestions about how to do this would be greatly appreciated by me and possibly others. Thank You, for your help. Joe.

Check out the Aeroturbine web page. I think it is dpperfomance.com?? They show you how with their system you turn the header pipe, to make it line up with a stright muffler. Well with theirs anyway! Their website also has the 5. 9 sound byt.
