Exhaust Regeneration

My 2008 has regenerated three times in about 150 miles of driving. It started at 80% full and stopped at 70% each time. Has anyone has this same thing happen or any insight into what might be the cause.

From what I assume, I havent had it happen yet. . but after it goes to 70%, then it turns off or it says "Complete". . That is just the active regen. . It is still at 69% and going down on Passive Regen. . . it needs to be run more and continuous after that to keep it going down... If you always do short trips or Idle a lot, it will re-occur sooner.

The Oil Change light will come on sooner too. I had done a lot of stop and go and the light came on at 2000 miles... do more freeway now and last oil change went to 7000 miles with no light. . so it is better for the truck and the Exhaust life to do more freeway or at least have it run enough to get hot for a bit.
 
I don't know the details of your driving as it relates to the regen cycles but I think Eric nailed it above.

Are you saying that you have shut the truck down several times during the regen cycle? If you are I think the shutdown terminates regen and regen won't reoccur until soot exceeds some measured parameter in the computer. You may not be driving long/far enough to complete the regen cycle so it restarts early.

Have been driving many short trips for the last three weeks following towing 1,100 miles. It just seemed like a very short time (probably only 200 miles in the past three weeks and regenerating three times in that period. Never had this happen before. I am in IL so I do not know if it might be the fuel. Will be making another 900 mi run Friday so I will see what happens.

How do you know when you truck is in Re Gen? I have a 2010. I love the truck and it rides like a caddy. I have noticed sometimes on the interstate it is not getting as good of mileage as other times and was wondering if it is in Re Gen.

Yes, all ISB6. 7 engines are burdened with the federal emissions standards that made exhaust regeneration necessary as well as exhaust gas recirculation.

If you avoid short trip, low speed city driving and long idle periods as much as possible in favor of more higher speed highway driving you'll never have a problem with it.

As you grow more familiar with the truck and its eccentricities you might notice a change of exhaust note at idle and very low speed and a slight stumble when transitioning from idle to launch but without gauges it is hard to detect and identify.

Reduced short term fuel economy while at interstate speed may also be an indication it is performing an exhaust regeneration.

I haven't seen any messages on my 2010 so I guess there aren't any. However, two times when I've been stopped, I get a smell that I can only describe as kerosene and charcoal lighter fluid. I have assumed that the truck is in regen when that occurs.

Harvey, I'm about ready to get an EGT gauge. WHere is the best place to install the probe? Is your gauge pillar mounted or elsewhere.

I've had gauges installed on all three of my Dodge Rams and the pyro probe always in the same place, center of the exhaust manifold on the side drilled and tapped horizontally. This is the location most installers and do-it-yourselfers choose. I've never heard of a damaged or cracked manifold caused by proper drilling and tapping.

I always use an A pillar mount and gauges from Geno's. If you're planning to install a pyro and gauge you might as well spend a few more bucks and install the twin gauge and A pillar mount and enjoy the benefit of observiing boost and exhaust gas temp. The boost gauge can be helpful in monitoring driving style and possibly improving fuel economy and can sometimes allow you to understand and diagnose a problem.

Low boost determined by my gauge allowed me to diagnose and advise the dealer's service department when I experienced a failed MAP sensor years ago on my '01 Ram. They couldn't identify the problem or fix it. They tried to tell me it was normal. Cummins Amarillo had no idea either when I called them.

I could see low boost under any driving condition while pulling my travel trailer. Armed with that info I called Bill Stockard and Joe Donnelly, relayed the symptoms and my observation, and Bill and Joe both said, "check the MAP sensor. "

Without a boost gauge I would not have known and the dealer's service department was utterly clueless. They couldn't have repaired it unless I told them to start replacing expensive parts at my expense.
