In the last thread, many seemed to think that the newer trucks sound bad with the factory 4" straight pipe. Because of that, I've got a few more questions.

Has anyone run an exhaust system larger than 4" on a 3rd Gen? 5"? 6"?

I'm thinking that instead of hacking up a good, new exhaust, I'll just remove it and go turbo back with a new system.

Is it true that an exhaust for an 03 or 04 truck will fit on an 04. 5 and up truck, just that because they don't want you removing the cat, they tell you it will not fit? Where it connects to the turbo is the same, correct?

they sound great straight piped... just run a long straight piece of 4" pipe between the downpipe and the tailpipe. heavier gauge tubing is better.

I run a 4" down pipe then is goes to 5" it sounds reallt good. It is not as raspy as 4" it is a deeper sound. It rattles peoples windows in there house.

Is it a 100% straight run?

yes, he just ran a length of straight pipe between the two. might have trimmed the downpipe, can't remember.

he's got a QC shortbed auto. when I rode in it, I noticed very little interior resonance.

Can you give me an estimate as to how long that piece of pipe will need to be?

Truck is being built next week, I gotta have it all ready when it gets here (I work 6 days a week).

Just did mine on Sat. I have a long bed quad cab and it took a 8' piece exactly... cat off... muffler off... straight through.

I do have a minor rattle/vibration around 2050-2150rpm's. I know, it's the dreaded drone. Wondering if adding a Bully, Banks, etc. muffler (just the muffler, keepin' the 4") would quiet that down? Thanks guys and gals.

anyone have a recording of their exhaust???

Does anyone have a sound clip of what their trucks sopund like?? I would love to hear the difference in straight pipe and a "flow through" muffler.

IF so, email or att. of whatever you got.

Wow, parts store wants $64 for a stick of 4". What are you guys paying?

If it's going to cost me that much I might just buy a whole exhaust system.

4" stuff is high, I bought a 3 ft stick and 2 90's to make the bend and it cost me $71. Then another $35 for the install. Kinda wish now I would have bought a complete 5" system. I did not know at the time that the inside diameter of the factory system is actually 3. 8 inches.

I think it cost me around $68 for my piece of 8' alumminized 4" diameter... . it is 14 gauge so that may make a difference

That's what I'm thinking, I just don't want to go too big. I don't intend on chipping the truck and 5" may be too much.

Heres a sound clip from the inside of my truck at night about 2 weeks after I straight piped it. I just took out the factory muffler and put in a piece of pipe with some band clamps, made a new hanger. Sound clip was taken with a video camera sitting on the seat, I just removed the sound from it. I start off in second and shift through the gears a little faster then a normal drive, and then wind it out in 6th to about 80mph, and then coasting back down to 60 or so. I love the sound of it, and when you get around 70mph the engine smooths out and you can barely hear it running except for the turbo whistle, its great. My only complaint is it sounds a little "weird" idling from the turbo fluttering. Its really neat going through town while having the windows rolled down and hearing the sound bounce back off the buildings and stuff :-laf
