Hello all,

The exhaust has rusted and fallen apart on my 2010 with about 47k miles. It is not going to be as simple as putting a new DEF-back pipe on, as the exit pipe from the DEF is also rusted and crumbling so attaching will be tough. As an emissions issue, shouldn't this be covered by my 100k warranty?

Has anyone else had this issue or fought this battle?

Thanks for any help (or simply commiseration...)

So.......have you been to your dealer?

5yr/50k mile warranty is for HD 6.7 and covers the "Exhaust System"

8yr/80k mile warranty covers the exhaust also and is technically a "Noise Emission" warranty............not sure if this would apply or not.

All this info is in your owners manual and you do need to take this up with a dealer to get it resolved. My suggestion is to move out of the RUST BELT!!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

The dealer told me it was not covered, and wanted $250 for a new muffler which is not even the issue. That's why I am asking here.

Moving out of the rust belt would solve a LOT of my problems!!!:)

If you don't have emission testing or inspections, delete that stuff and add a tuner to kill the check engine light.

Unfortunately for you, Ram specifically lists "salt" as a cause of damage that isn't covered. I'm guessing that other OEM's are the same?

Awesome. Salt. Because no one in the US encounters that. I plan to ditch it all once warranty is up, but I'm a ways from there now. It looks like getting a 2014 is my only option at this point:)

There is nothing finer as far as road treatment chemicals are concerned than something hot to cling to.

Exhaust systems, lower coolant and transmission lines, oil coolers and air compressors on big truck engines, etc....

It is always a treat to tell a customer that he gets no core credit ($261.00) on his reman oil cooler because of road salt damage.

I'd talk to a local custom exhaust shop. They might be able to salvage enough of the DPF to weld on a stub so you can attach a muffler and tail pipe.

And I think that its only going to get worse, now they are using the liquid brine solution, in stead of salt. This is instant rust maker.

Is salt still used because of the cost? They've been using sand here in Ca as long as I can remember but that doesn't say much.

Liquid brine (Weasel Snot) clears the road faster and saves windshields. Everyone can get back to drivin' 75mph way sooner.

It is hard on vehicles plus you don't have sand to grab on the edge of the road like you used to be able to do when freezing rain hits.

I assume that it is cheaper to purchase and it eliminates having to build (or minimizes the size of) a covered shed for storage of the salt/sand mix like you have to do up here now by decree of the EPA.

They have just started using brine solution here in interior Alaska and the public is ready to hang management at DOT. You can literally hear your cars rusting after a drive around town. It actually made our roads worse because of the lower temps. It freezes at approx 10 degrees f...........I prefer sand and gravel. If I was scared of a little ice on the road I'd live in Hawaii.

It will screw up the roads as it travels down into the cracks, freezes and pushes the asphalt up. It will get bumpy. Then the asphalt will start to break up.

They will be about two years figuring how to apply it like MDOT was. The first two years driving on that crap was scary as hell as it would go from wet to frozen and back during a 60 mile drive. Be careful driving on it.

Yes we are the SALt capital of the country we produce and deliver where ever. Just drive I-80 west from SLC in the fall or any time. and see the giant mounds of salt that has been harvested from the GREAT SALT LAKE. It takes more water from the lake to produce now, its not as salty as it use to be.

I live in central NJ. my exhaust broke apart from rust at the top of the curving exhaust pipe right near the spare tire. I've seen a couple of other trucks driving around with heavy rust in that same area. I did a DPF back system with a Magnaflow stainless. Luckily I got the kit that had both the muffler and the muffler delete pipe. I cut the small pipe off of the DPF. It was suppose to stay. So I had to custom cut the delete pipe. I wasn't going to bother with the dealer. If he did replace it I would only have a couple more years and have to start over. This sytem has a lifetime warranty and it was under $400.00 bucks...................Done!

I think the last couple of years they were using a Beet solution instead of salt around my neck of the woods. I still don't know what they were thinking. When it got bad enough they would throw some salt, but I don't know that they had salt brine.
