The first few times I drained my fuel filter I put a 20 oz soda bottle at the end of the hose so I would not get fuel in the driveway. The next few times I just drained it, thats when I started getting the smell in the cab when stoped at a light. I took a closer look and when not draining the diesel in a soda bottle it pools on the rack and pinion, then when driven right after it blows on the engine.

I'm gonna extend the drain hose and see if this fixes the issue. Seems like it is really bad right after draining the filter, but no smell at all after 4-5 days of driving for me.

Has anyone else tried this?

I extended my drain hose. It's a . 5" ID hose. I like it a lot better but it's not a 5 minute fix-it job. For starters, unless you are 5 years old it's a tough squeeze to get your hand in their and attach the new hose to the fuel filter box. It's also tough to get a new zip-tie around there. I ended up sticking a . 5" nipple on the existing hose and connecting my extension to the nipple. The other problem I ran into was the hose I got from Lowes was rolled up. No biggie, but it wants to return to that rolled-up position and is pretty much crimped along its entire length. I would suggest filling the hose with sand, sealing the ends with tape and then dropping the hose in hot water for a few minutes to reshape it, then empty the sand and rinse before hooking it up. One other minor hassle is that there is no "great" place to stick the hose when it's not in use that are also out of the way of moving or hot parts. Other than that it works great, and I can sit a peanut butter jar on the pavement and drain right into that.

The blow by smell is totally different from the smell of raw diesel after draining the filter. The cowl fix might be a cure for the raw diesel smell also, though. If it works as advertised it'll keep the fumes out of the cab.
