Exhaust smell in cab?

i just bought my first new diesel 2004 crew cab duallie 5. 9 HO and just wondering when i come to a stop lite i get a faint wiff of what i think smells like diesel or something to that effect is this normal?

Is truck new it may be the coating on the motor,Also certain HD motor oils produce more odor and smoke more than others do, Cummins blue 15-40 seems to be odor and smoke free.

I read alot of comments like this on these boards. I've owned two Cummins diesel Rams and both of them got the diesel smell in the cab. Less smell if I keep the air on recycle. After a few thousand miles, the smell lessens dramatically. To me, it's just part of owning a new diesel -- it's that "new diesel smell".



For others, it's a big deal - a "breathing hazard" so to speak and they have gone to great lengths to change this and that to elminate the odor. Do a search of the 3G board and you'll find some opinions on how they attempted to fix the "problem".

This is diesel number 24 for me and its well beyond a slight whiff. Family members have gotten sick, I've sealed the cowl, checked the body plugs and ran the crank case hose back to the fuel tank and I still get a VERY strong exhaust [not burned engine or crank fumes] in the cab unless on recirc. I did not pay this kind of money to have my cowl duct taped or have this level of fumes.

Its not much better then running the truck in the shop with no ventilation.



Transport Canada is involved and theres more trucks with the serious problem then I thought.



I am at the dealers again on Monday as DC told them "Fix it and tell us what the fix is. "



Worst exhaust gas fumes ever in a Dodge Ram for me and this one is not modified yet.

Scott1, what type of oil are you using,We are running S-3000 5-30W HD right now, we were running 15-40W cummins blue in the summer and fall did not notice the smell or smoke . We have use other types of oil, smell and smoke was difference with all ,rottella seem to be the worse as far as smell/odor.

I had the same smell with my 02 and also with the 04. 5.

On the 02 I was worried cause it was bad. The smell went away about 2500 miles after the first oil change. With the 04. 5 it is the same, but not as strong.

I did the cowl fix the smell is a little better. I am planning on adding a couple feet to the breather hose to see if that helps.



Some have suggested that the exsessive blow-by may be caused from valve out of adjustment.

As long as I have the air vent on "recirculate" I don't get any at all. When I do (with the recirc open) it's certainly not as bad as running behind an out of tune or wore out gasser and NOTHING like running a 6000 horse locomotive with about a 12 inch diameter exhaust pipe.

I had the smell of oil in the cab but now with 5000 miles, I never smell it. Hopefully it'll stay that way.
