Have 03 that smells like exhaust when idling with heater on. If wind is blowing the right direction almost burns the eyes. Have two friends with 04 & 03 with same problem. Does anyone know of a TSB that might deal with this?

Mine used to have an oil smell, but it went away when I switched to full synthetic oil. (Mobil1 truck & suv) ... If you put the fan on recirculate instead of fresh air, that helps also.

STSchroeder, ttreibel (Tom Treibel) had a similar problem and went through quite a long drawn-out ordeal solving it. As I recall there was a leak in the cowling area which allowed air to be drawn out of the engine bay with the heater on, and there was an exhaust leak around the manifold. You might shoot him a PM.

Another thing too - the exhaust smell is strong (sort of rich smelling) on the 3rd Gens at idle, especially in cool weather, even with the engine hot. I think this is because the rail pressure is pretty low at ilde and fuel atomization isn't that good. And strong-smelling exhaust is going to be more noticeable if it wafts towards the cowl intake.

Ah diesel smell. I changed to Rotella and don't notice the really bad smell that everyone talks about. In college I worked a bus shop where it was my job to start every bus at 5:30 am. Took almost 30 minutes to get all 60-80 busses going and man was that parking lot smokey! These were old 555's in early 80 thomas busses... Now I remember all those good times when my own disel smells a little!
