At first I couldn't figure out where to post this question, but then realized an exhaust sound's biggest contributor is the engine. :)

I'm trying to figure out what I should do next with my rig, and it seems like exhaust is next. Since I don't have any huge power mods (just at PE-EZ), I'm mostly looking to get a better sound out of the tail pipe. :D

With stock injectors and stock turbo, how do the various changes to the exhaust change the sound? As far as I can tell, there are a bunch of things that can be done: no muffler, no resonator, 4", etc.

Anyone have any before/after recordings?

Rip's exhaust....

With the Allied truck muffler sounds really sweet on our 02. I have Jardines on my 01 and the resonator to kill the drone and it sounds whimpy compared to the Allied. Jardines sounds better than stock but... ... I recently ordered the Allied muffler for mine and a section of pipe. I'll let you know how it sounds in a truck that's loaded all the time.

Nemies,

Start by removing the muffler( about the cheapest thing you can do ) and see how you like it, then go on from there.

I built 4" turbo back and used the Walker 21471, 4" straight thru. I thought the noise was too much especially at higher rpm when the turbo really gets going. I drilled holes in the ends this weekend and stuffed $25 worth of steel wool in it. It sounds great now - deep tone, much quieter. I think I can stand to have the right window down on long trips now. I like Rip's system www.sourceautomotive.biz I wanted somthin different though so I had him install 4 inch from the resinator back without a muffler. Its a little louder and not quite as "clean" sounding as the Allied muffler. Just what I was lookin for. Oo.

I have not heard any system yet that sounds better than the one on my truck. It sounds like a big rig, but no drone, in fact I love to have BOTH windows down it sounds so good. However, at above 60 MPH too much wind comes through those big windows. There is NO dreaded drone because you get a muffler designed for a diesel. Jardine of California 4 inch turbo back kit. The price is right too!

Get rid of everything and go straight back with nothing, now that is a sweet sound! At least try it first, cant go wrong.

geno's kit?

Geno's Muffler Elimination Kit doesn't mention what it's made out of. Is it just steel, or is it stainless, aluminized, etc? Anyone know?

This sounds like the first place to start. Are there better options for repairing a fallen-off muffler? ;)

I spent less than $30 and it sound great! Piece of straight pipe, a hand full of clamps and a little help from the blue wrench for removal of stock muff and resonator. With windows up the sound difference is minimal, a little louder, but far from annoying. :D :D

With windows down my firs impression was:--) then:D :D :D :D

I have a 3. 5" downpipe until about the middle of the cab where it goes to 5" straight to the rear axle and exits in front of the right duals. I have a turn down pointed at the ground. It is very loud and has a terrible drone at about 60MPH. Pulling a load and passing people it is not uncommon to get to the rear bumper of the vehicle I am passing and watch their window go up. :D :D :D
