It's getting warmer, and I'm starting to get the bug to work on the truck (no garage). I'm not ready to dump a bunch of money into a 4" exhaust system, but am wondering if I will see any significant temperature drop by removing the muffler on my stock system. More importantly, how much better will it sound. I plan on leaving the resonater in place.

Does anybody have a sound file (or video with sound) of their truck with this done?

I know the ones; I even have one as the start-up sound on my computer. I believe however, they are all 4" systems. I was hoping someone with a stock system w/o muffler could do a "home-job", to give me a rough idea of how it might sound. (I really want to take it off, but don't want it to sound cheap, like a garbage truck). I want the poor-man's 4" sound #ad

Any thoughts on EGT's?

If you just remove the muffler, you may notice a that your truck is slightly louder, but only when you are outside of the truck. My muffler fell of on the road sometime ago. . and I hardly notice any difference. Only when I really romp on the throttle does the truck even sound any louder. . and again. . it really isn't noticable.

Just my $. 02

I Just removed my stock resonator and muffler and replaced it with a Walker 3". All I can say is my truck sounds like sh**t. I have a 6 speed and everytime I upshift you hear this annoying whistle. I have a tread in the products forum trying to figure out what to do. Some guys like the sound of that whistle, I can't stand it.

About a week ago I took off my muffler and went 4" from the resonator back. It sounds good, but under a load and around 2000 RPM's it has a deep rumble in the cab. I don't mind it when I'm by-myself, but with other people it can be noisy when your trying to talk. You can hear the turbo GOOD, it spools faster. If you like the turbo you'll love it afterwards! My . 02 worth.

Well:

I ran my truck for a couple of days w/out a muffler/resonator and I didn't like it. Truck sounded like an /Army duece and a half. I have a BD 4" exhaust sytem and love the way it sounds. I get lots of compliments on the sound.

My two cents: Try it w/out the muffler. If you like it fine, if not, put it back stock or grab the $500 for a 4" kit.

You'll win, not matter which way you go. #ad

I am like you I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a exhaut system. I removed my muffler and got a piece of 4 in flex ehaust pipe and used all the existing hangers and the 4 in tip. It has more sound at tail pipe and when you get down on it a little roar at 2000 rpm. Have not pulled with it yet so don;t know. I like it
Good luck with your choice

Same boat.

At this point, I'm not in a position to shell out $450 for a 4" but I had to do something to get her to purr a little better. I think I'm going with a Walker 21471 and try to fit that to a 4" mandrel bent Walker tailpipe, part are around $155. This way all I need to do is get the downpipe and some 4" to go 4" all the way.

I thought about straight pipe and would like to hear it with no muffler. Maybe I'll try that first and then decide. It would save me $100 for the muffler. I wish I could hear a straight pipe in person. I have heard the Walker and I do know I like it, so that is why I am going that route.

Anybody have comments on Walker vs. Straight Pipe?

Thanks for the posts.

GTSJOE, you should not be offended, since your truck is a "big-rig". That is exactly the sound I'm after. I'm just trying to do it for under $50.

I have not heard definitively what it sounds like with the resonater in place (instead of just straight through). Looks like I'll have to cut the front side, and listen before I take it off all the way. I'm out of town the next few weekends, so the experiment may have to wait a little while.

i can't make any of the sound files mentioned here to work (can't get jannetty to work at home either). am i doin' something wrong? windows media player comes up... just won't play.
