Hello, all:

I've decided to do my first BOMB... the exhaust. What I'm looking for is looks (duals) and a lower, more authoritative tone. A small increase in sound is OK but with NO DRONE. On my '95, I had a shop remove the muffler and fabricate a custom dual 3" system into 5" chrome tips. The look and sound was awesome but the dreaded drone was terrible.

On my '01, I think I'll put in the better downpipe and use 4" pipe right to the muffler. Then I'll return to the same shop for round 2, this time with 4" duals (Thanks Ted J).

Has anyone done this themselves? How easy is it?

I searched the archives and found that the majority uses a Walker 21471 placed as far back as possible. Anyone have a bad experience with this muffler? Anyone know of a better muffler priced reasonably that will do what I want?

Any vendors who see this and have ideas please email me info including a price.

TIA, dp

Can't vouch for this one because I've never seen it, but it sounded interesting. I shipped my old stock exhaust system to a non-TDR member in Denver last year. He asked me to cut it in two select places to make it smaller for shipping. He then welded it on right past his stock muffler for duals, one on each side. Said it worked easy and sounded great, but would be even easier if both pipes come out the same side. With two stock pipes it comes out much bigger than one 4". Bet there are a bunch of old stock exhausts out there waiting to be given away...

Advanced Turbo Systems (ATS) markets a nice looking dual 4" stainless exhaust package. Spendy, but I don't recall hearing (npi) or reading of anyone with a SS exhaust system complain on the dreaded drone.

I'm looking at dual systems, too. It is to let the local gen X cowboys in their Cheby gassers what powers a real pick-em-up truck...

I may be off track but........

After curing my drone with a 4" resonator I got to thinking that if one were to place the muffler as far forward as possible it might help with the drone problem. The resonator is just a smaller version of a straight thru muffler. If you had one of the round mufflers it would probably be able to go pretty far forward. As my system is in I would be curious to see if it would work on someone's truck?

try a local big truck parts place, for a muffler. i think i saw a muffler in the catalog at one the other day with single 4" inlet and two 4" outlets. i don't know if it was "straight thru", though.

not many muffler shops can work 4" pipe--may have to shop around??, but if so they should be able to make custom tailpipes for you.
