I personally don't like my rigs loud, but do want them to breathe. I used the lifetime warranted stainless steel Banks full flowing muffler, but there are many others available. Trucks sound different, but not louder.

With out a muffler it is pretty loud. At idle the tone is kinda bad but not that loud. Once you give it some gas it gets pretty loud, almost to the point that you can not talk to the person next to you. It sounds like the garbage trucks.

JJP:

Joe Donnelly did extensive testing on
the large 4" exhaust systems and found
that unless you are above 300-350 H. P.
that they do not help the power that
much. Before you spend the money, e-mail
Joe! He can give you all of his test
results on those 4" systems.

Ok guys, My muffler outlet just rotted off and while the exhaust system is being worked on what are your recommendations. It is a 1996, auto trans, 3. 54 rear end with 76000 miles. It is totally stock except for the silencer ring removed. I only pull 7000 lbs and that is only 2 times a year so a stock engine is really all I need and I want to keep it as long as possible (read as: no transmission problems). The cat will obviously not return. What muffler do you all recommend? How loud is no muffler at all? Would a 4 inch exhaust be of any benefit if I'm keeping the truck stock? Any and all comments greatly appreiciated.

HMMMMMM, I'm talking about a 1996 exhaust system and my post gets put in the 1998. 5-2001 engine and drivetrain. I must not have a problem. Even though my muffler rotted off it still turns the driveshaft.

That was a mistake JJP - I'm not sure who moved it, but we can ALL make mistakes sometimes. I apologize - I'm going to move this to products because that's where it should really be. You'll probably get the most responses there since AFAIK there isn't a difference from the turbo back on 12v vs 24v trucks. Again - sorry about the confusion!

The four inch system will help lower your EGT's a bit. Plus, turbo cooldown time will be reduced when you go to shut off the truck. Some folks are bothered by the noise level you get with some of the available systems.
