Is there any corrolantion between exhaust temp and coolant temp?

Such as, if I am doing a long climb with a cgvw of 22K# My coolant will rise just a little. Does that also mean that my exhaust temp has risen? (100% stock truck, 98. 5 2500, 24v, 4. 10, auto)

Also, can the exhaust temp rise without the coolant temp gauge showing any rise.

Thanks

Bob

Yes, yes and yes. LOL. The hotter the exhuast temps the hotter the coolant temps will get. When you climb with a load on the exhuast gas temps go up bigtime over running on flat ground, it is the coolant and oil's job to get rid of this heat. You see the water temps climb as the cooling system is working to get rid of the excessive heat. The cooling system on our trucks has a huge capacity for getting rid of heat, so exhuast temps can go up for a short period without seeing the water temps go up.

I am a firm bielever in pyrometers. Your exhaust gas temps can exceed the melting limits of the aluminum pistons while coolant temps are in the normal range. On a stock 24 valve in normal hauling-towing conditions I doubt that you would see egts high enough to do damage. BOMB a little and tow heavy in hot-dry conditions without a pyrometer and you could be looking at a VERY expensive repair. IMO a egt gauge is a must.

When pulling mountains with a gross weight of 19K+, I have to back off a little on the throtle to keep EGTs, post turbo, from getting too high----try to keep them at or below 900, but real easy to see them climb quickly to 1000 while still pulling the hill fine. It takes only a slight backing off to bring them down to 900.
I just installed a K&N cone type filter-can notice no noise diff. (I do not hear the best), and have not pulled with a load yet to see if that makes any diff. Next would like to try a 4" exhaust to see if that makes a diff in EGTs. I am stock. (guess I am sneaking up on bombing :).

Hey Vauhn,you really need to get psychotty box and the K&N RE 0880 filter,you have to drill 41/2'' hole in firewall,tell you what,you are now drawing fresh clean air from base of windshield outside engine compartment you won't believe your ears it sounds very very cool infact it is very cool,best of luck, jdm joe

Everyone who rides in my truck is amazed at how rapidly the EGT's go up and down. Touch the pedal, and you're instantly looking at a several hundred degree increase. My water temp gauge rarely moves.
Even if you're stock, this gauge is the best thing since sliced bread. It protects your engine and your turbo. you can use it to help maximize mpg, and minimize cooldown times by backing off a few minutes before you stop. And it's just plain fun to watch. #ad

Joe,
I have the K&N you mention, except its the model that has filter mateial on the end also--can't remember off hand the number, seems like its 4770 or some such. At K&N they say it flows a little more air. I just couldn't get the brass to cut the hole in the fire wall.

YOUR HONOR,sorry I could'nt help myself,lolol,you know Vauhn it really is a piece of cake to drill a 41/2''hole in metal just find someone who has nice offset hole hog or wild cat 1/2 drill with clutch,they will have an assortment ob bits we all do in the industry,i'm a mechanical contracter and i've been drilling metal for years,you have got to hear one of these cut into firewall,it truly is music!!!!!------------------------------------------------------------19981/2 1 ton dually,Quad cab,auto,355 gears,BD brake,air ride rear,custom utility enclosure,alloys,pschotti,light driftwood,mathing trailor{made from original bed w/duals} fixin to install 4'' stacks w/out those pain in the neck mufflers lollol,also ready for valve body work. Well gota go,hope you change your mind and drill that hole,best regards,jdmjoe

Joe;
You know how it is with us bench types, take forever to decide on something.
Part of the problem is that my "bombing" ideas keep getting pushed to the back burner by more pressing problems,(just finished building two soap box derby cars for twin grandsons etc)
