while i was in flordia i bought a new boat. it's a 30 foot mariah speed boat on a 35 foot aluminum dual axel trailer. i figure the boat and trailer weigh about 7000lbs. here's the problem: on the way home exhaust would get real hot. thats with the ez on level 1. i tried to stay below 1300* as much as possible. whats the safeist tempature i can hold it at? crusing on the flats i'd only get to about 8-900*. i only have a problem getting up to speed and on the hills. before next winter i'll be getting a bigger turbo to help cool those edm 80 hp injectors! thanks... . james

You should be able to hold it at 1250* continuously, 1350* for less than 1 minute (considering water and oil temp is normal) with a 4-5 minute cool down below 1250*, 1450* for 10 seconds or less. This is just a rough guide line, following this does not mean you wont wreck anything. Anytime you go above 1250* pre turbo the temps are hot enough to melt things. I have hit over 1500* on short burst racing and have done no damage at the time, but if you repeat this lots a stock head may not take it due to the expansion and contraction related to these temps.

How fast are you driving? When was the last time you cleaned your air filter? Keeping the RPM's around 1900 will help a lot with EGT's. I learned all this last week. Towed a boat for a member from Maryland to Reno. 5700 miles in 7 days.

Check the hubs and bearings on the trailer. If they are too tight it will create drag and lots of heat. Make sure the bearings are properly lubed. I lost an entire bearing/spindle assembly last week. After it was fixed, my mileage went up and temps went down so it had been going bad for a while.

Also, by your sig, if all you did was lose the cat and put on a different muffler without changing the rest of the plumbing it will cause the EGT's to stay high due to the restrictive nature of the bends on the stock exhaust tubing.

There's a thread here somewhere that discussed what Cummins did with the new 325/600 engines. Ran them for days/weeks WOT@1350+ EGT's with no ill effects. These new engines run much hotter than the earlier 24V's; I used the 1250 rule of thumb on my '99, but added 100 degrees to the rule for my 600, based on that thread. I concur with checking to make sure your air filter isn't too dirty, keeping the RPM's up (O/D off), and making sure there isn't some other parasitic drag from your trailer. You will see higher EGT's, and with just the EZ I'd say you would be OK anytime on level 1, but not sure what your injectors may be doing to the equation. When budget (or Chief Financial Officer :D ) allows, I'd go with a bigger turbo, it sounds like you're gonna need it :-laf
