exhaust temps?

I have and edge ez and the elbow. Everything else is stock except the dtt torque converter and the valve body. I have just gotten back from a trip pulling a 27 foot travel trailer from Tenn. to Fla. and back. It probably weight about 5 to 7 k. lbs. This truck has all the power I need to pull this thing. My question is on long pulls am I going to get into trouble with too high of exhaust temps. I don have a pyrometer and yes I do plan on getting one. Does anyone out there have a similar setup as mine with a pyrometer that can tell me what kind of exhaust temperatures they see when they pull something?

Thanks

I have an Edge EZ and still haven't gotten around to putting the elbow on. When pulling my 5th wheel (30', maybe 9K lbs ??) I can hit 1200 degrees on a long pull but have never been over that. I would think you are fine.

Ken,

I pull a 10K 5th wheel and my setup is pretty much stock except for the EZ and Boost Elbow. I've come close to 1200 degrees on some uphill pulls, but not over.

I don't think you have anything to worry about, with your setup. The gauges are nice, especially the fuel pressure gauge (with all the problems the lift pumps have ---- I replaced my stock lift pump at 20K). Have fun... :)

You have nothing to worry about with the set up as long as nothing goes wrong. If you develop a boost leak and you don't have a pyrometer temps can get high enough to burn it down, but that can also happen without the EZ on it.

Do you feel lucky, or more accurately can you afford to take the chance that it might quit on you? If it quitting on you is not that big of a deal then skip the gauges completely.

Eggzacktly! If all the cooling fins are clear, and full and proper boost is being made, and your TPS is working right and the IAT isn't sooted over, and Jupiter and Mars aren't visible at the same time. --nothing can happen. But let a sail-possum get stuck to the radiator, a tree-rat chew a hole in a boot, or any number of other things which might increase the heat directly or indirectly, and without gauges--you might have a problem.

And we don't want problems. ;)

So bring your radio-talking self out to our NEXT MT-TDR meeting and see trucks and gauges and such.

2pm Sunday 19th at Hooters, M'boro.

We'll start having "tech" meetings as well for doing little jobs with group effort, like KDP's gauges, other stuff. We just need to find out who has the bestest shop. Mine is a shade tree.

Pulling our 13,500 lb, 13'2" tall 5th wheel, my truck would hit 1300 degF pre-turbo EGT at 22 PSIG boost, with stock airbox and with the BHAF. One weekend I added the EZ, boost elbow and Jardine 4" exhaust. Maximum pre-turbo EGT dropped to 1100 degF, and maximum boost increased to 30 PSIG (this is with the stock ETH injectors. )

Therefore, if your experience is anything like mine, your EGTs ought to be better than stock with only the EZ and boost elbow. Having said that, I would highly recommend gauges to anyone who tows heavy (stock or not) and certainly to anyone who is BOMBing the truck.
