Ditch the muffler. It doesn't make it any louder in the cab. The turbo and the cat quiet it down enough to keep Johnny Law happy.

What about switching to a 5 inch exhaust to get rid of the drone?

I havent really had any issues with Drone on mine but then again like I said in my first message this thing has been on my truck since it was less than one week old.

So ditching the muff and installing Geno's replacement pipe piece should lower EGT and create more flow, or is a 4" system with 2 muffs a sure cure for more flow, lower EGT. I heard you still get the drone with the muff removed?

I have the lady and child to think about too. I've lost enough hearing already, what!

Which Jardine system do you have there are two different exhaust companys named Jardine.

Jardine of California and Jerry(?) Jardine.

Thanks

I don't know about the 4" system. I just took the muffler off mine and don't have any drone (and I didn't have an EGT gauge until long after the muffler was gone).

From inside, it sounds just like my '97 that still has its muffler. My wife and kids don't complain a bit. (Of course, she's an SCCA National Champion, and the kids race a go kart, so their ears may be calibrated a little differently!)

P. S. Taking the muffler *and* the cat off was WAY loud, so the cat's back on. (Lost a friend at night in traffic with that setup. He said he just listened for the semi that wasn't one and found us. )

I wasn't sure..........

Garrett. I tried to move the muffler forward, but on a quad cab shortwheelbase there just isnt enough room to put the muffler forward one section, the crossmemeber is in the way. The best i could would be to hack it up ,and move it up about 2 feet. This would require cutting and expanding the 4",no one here ha the dies to do the 4" pipe,We have a pipe machine at the shop, but nothing bigger than 3" dies.

What size pipes did your kit come with? Mine (long bed) had two 4' or so pieces. I imagine from the motor back to the cross member would be the same for all trucks. I guess you would have on extra long piece then?

Because I used regular clamps the first go round I had to damage some pipe the first time I took it apart to add the resonator. I called Rip Rook and he made me a piece to my measurements after I got the Allied muffler from him. It wasn't expensive and well worth the cost to eleminate any possible drone. With a muffler having 2 female ends you would only need a piece with 1 straight and 1 flared end. Measure how far up you want to move it and do the math. He can send you one pretty quick. Here's where mine sits on the 02. It's right about where the Factory Resonator sat.

My truck is an 02, which came with the resonator and muffler both. I had just the muffler removed, left the resonator. There is no drone. My daughter was born on Jan 16- two months premature. She was/is tiny. The last thing I would tolerate is a drone on her little ears. Trust me, deleting just the muffler will not annoy you with a drone. She sleeps like a log in her little car seat. My wife didn't even notice the change until I rolled the window down and told her to listen to the new sound.

Oh, by the way, I noticed my mileage dropped after the muffler removal. Driving around with the right window down, listening to the exhaust did it. Sure sounds good under boost. After a few weeks, I quit dogging on it all the time, and the mileage returned to normal. :D

Did you remove the muffler yourself, or did you have a shop do it?

I am tracking a couple of different threads right now about exhaust mods, and I am about to go over to the local parts shop and grab a piece of 4" pipe and a reducer an pop the muffler out. This is all presuming the muffler is clamped and not welded or fused. I have no $$$ to pay a shop and hope I can do this solo. It seems that a lot of people think that stock or light bombing will get the necessary flow to keep EGT’s down with the stock exhaust system minus the muffler.

Opinions?

it did

i had both resenator and muffler off and it cost 60$ at the local muff shop. I observed faster spool up not shure on egt's dont have one yeat. but like the sound:D :D ararararar Justin

Mine is not that loud... Last time at the strip I was heard at 102 Db... .    I cannot imagine what that sounds like 5 feet away at ricer level. :D

Nah, I wimped out. The local muffler guy did it for $35. 4 inch aluminized pipe. There was a hanger on the stock muffler, which he cut off and extended and rewelded it to the new straight pipe section.

I'm surprized JJW-ND missed this thread.

He tried many different exhaust systems before going to Jerry Jardine (Pinnacle Performance) system. It was still too loud for him and Jardine sent another muffler to install. Last report was very quiet.

I have a hodge podge of 4" exhaust and with a single 4" Allied truck muffler (Rip sells this) I have a very small drone window. I plan to install a second Allied muffler to get rid of the drone window.

Been gone a while!

Man does the reading get backed up when you ckeckout for a week.

I don't think those of you who either do not have the "drone" or do not hear the drone can appreciate how much of a bother it really is. I like a cool sounding truck (I have one!), I did not like that cool loud sound after 100 miles with trailers in tow and 600 more to go.

BigWhiteBeast found the same solution that I did. Experiment with the position of the muffler/resonator and then add an additional muffler/resonator.

Jardine made sure I as satisfied and help me with trying different mufflers or mini mufflers/resonators.

BTW..... I tried the angle iron clamped to ever area of the system. I even tried the EpiFlex (flex hose). Neither did anything substantial.

Switch or start out with band clamps as mentioned above. Makes for simple removal and changes with no heat or damage.

I achieved my satisfying sound from two mufflers. One is as far forward as possible (just behind the transmission hanger bracket, the second is in the factory locaiton.

Jardine uses a good muffler and pipe. He will take care of you!

I don't have any drone with the Banks SS system. I called the boys at Banks a few weeks ago and complained about this system being to quiet.

These guys were very cool about it and produced a length of 4"SS for me to remove the muffler. It arrived along with the hanger. This is a remove and transfer in "straight pipe" kit for 4"Banks systems! I can't believe these guys did this for me! I've not installed it yet due to time constraints but it will happen soon.

I recall a thread running last year where Evan Beck chimed in and stated he had the Banks 4" SS and that he had removed the muffler also. He said it now sounds "beastly". I don't want loud or a drone... but I'll settle for "beastly":D

Is anyone else running a Banks 4" SS system straight piped?

William

If you want quiet......

I'm a firm believer in a system with dual dampeners. Look under any late model stock vehicle, & you will almost always find at least 2 dampening devices, often 3. Usually a cat & a muff. Sometimes a cat , a muff, & a resonator. I installed a 4" system recently with a 24" Magnaflow in the stock location, & a 20" magnaflow as far forward as space allowed. This thing was VERY quiet. Quieter than stock, (IMO) & my customer agreed. I've had SEVERAL different set ups on my own truck. I'm about to change it again to a 5" resonator & the largest, longest, straight thru muffler I can fit under there. I want QUIET, but I want FLOW too..... Rip

New Guy, Stock '95 12V, need advice

Hello folks. I've been reading everything for about a week now and getting a lot of good ideas. I just bought my first diesel, a very stock '95 std. cab 2wd, and lovin' it. (Anyone wanna '84 3/4 ton chevy), and haven't decided which HP to go for, 230hp, 250hp, or 270hp, (TST looks like good value on plates and AFC springs), and I may eventually spring for the Piers cam, but for this thread, I'm interested in getting 4" ex, but want QUIET. . I haven't read anything about 4" cat's and since I'm in Calif. I suppose if I want to stay 'legal' (hah, hah), I should get a good cat and good straight thru muffler. I suspect that here in Calif. , if I keep it "Looking" legal I won't get hassled, (any info on Calif. is appreciated). Any and all comments are welcome, and thanks for having me. (I'll never have a 'gas' truck again!!). . John G

I have had a Jardine 4" system with a 24" MagnaFlow muffler on my truck for over 2 years. I finally got tired of the excess noise (guess I'm getting old) Anyway I called Rip and made arrangements for him to bring a 20" MagnaFlow this last weekend to the NorthWest Bombers Bombing party (54 trucks) at Rob Hanson's. With Rip's suggestion and guidance I installed the new 20" and kept my existing 24". I installed the 20" as far forward as I could.

I can't beleive the difference the 20" has made! It is nice and quiet without restricting the flow. After pulling my travel trailer for 4+ hours my ears don't ring any more! :D

If anyone is having this noise problem, call Rip, his prices and service are great, and install a second muffler. I chose the MagnaFlow because of it's straight through design and virtually no restriction.

Hope this helps some of you who are tired of the drone and noise.

I know, I Know! What can I say, I'm just getting old. However, I do enjoy not having the ringing in my ears after a long drive.

JohnG-

If you do need a 4" cat, I found an ad in PSR (Powerstroke Registry). Powerhouse Diesel Performance has a 4" cat for around $100. Looks to be a staight-thru design. www.dieselpowerhouse.com or (888)388-3430 I've never done business with these guys, so I don't what they are like.
