Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Exhaust Upgrade

I'm looking to upgrade the Exhaust on my 2001 Ram3500 Quad Cab Dually running 5.9 Cummins. looking for advice on differences between upgrading to 4" or 5". is the 5" worth the extra cost? truck is mainly used to pull a 11,000 lb 5th wheel travel trailer. i am looking for performance without a lot of noise as we will be sitting in it for long hours traveling. engine is basically stock with a smarty Jr for performance. Also looking at fresh air intake upgrade options.

Unless you have jacked the HP way up you won't see a bit of difference in performance vs the stock exhaust. The muffler you choose pretty much dictates the noise level. Unless the stock system is compromised I say save your money. If you need a new exhaust a 4 inch will be plenty sufficient.

4" is more than enough for most, but 5" must be popular since I see more kits in that size. I have an old 4" Rip Rook system on my truck, but I only see a 5" version available now. I have a fancy resonator under my cab with a stainless turn down tip at the stock location. I would probably do the same thing again, or a 5" version if thats all I could get. I think i paid $300 for mine, its gone up to $350 now, $450 with a muffler. I went with an aero resonator instead of a normal muffler, the truck is loud outside, but no droan in the cab.

Like they said, 4” is plenty and 5” doesn’t give you much room to work with. I like my galvanized MBRP system that’s been on my ‘95 and now my ‘98.

I have a new muffler enroute. A replacement for my lifetime warranty MBRP system.

Our 98.5 has a stock exhaust - no matter what I do to it, I'm not be able to hear that exhaust over the noise out of the engine bay.
My guess is that even with just the small muffler it will still be quiet.
This 98.5 has a REALLY unbelievable noisy engine.
My 04.5 compared purrs like a cat.

My 98.5 was unbelievably noisy. People would wince everywhere I went.
Yeah,when I bought my '07 5.9 I proclaimed "there is a God." I had a high flow reasonably quiet muffler for 12 years and when that corroded I returned the Mopar one. Identical overhead lie-o-meter and performance.
