Exhaust What To Do?

I have read multiple threads on exhaust mods and am still thoroughly confused. I want good noise with no more drone than stock and was going to go with a muff elim kit from geno's and keep the cat but now I'm toying with the idea of a complete turbo back system. I have a 04. 5 600 and live in Lexington, Ky. I don't know any shops that I would trust to do an exhaust system, I can do the muff elim kit myself. Please help with any experiences you have had with muffler shop/performance centers. I am willing to travel anywhere in Ky and Tenneesee if need be. i don't want a bunch of half wits hacking on my 40000 dollar truck. thanks

I installed a FlowMaster Delta Flow Diesel Series muffler on my '03 and it may be what you're looking for... ..... somewhat louder than stock at idle, pleasantly louder at cruising speeds, and sounds great under a load at 1400-1700 rpms, all without any annoying drone syndrome; it won't wear you out on a long trip at interstate speeds. By the way, I work at S&S Tire in Beaumont Center off Harrodsburg Road. PM me if you want to listen before buying. Ernie at Exhaust Pro just off Boston Road performed my install. I read a post on the 51" donaldson, it sounds like a nice system. Do a search and see what you think.

Check my post from a few days ago about the new exhaust for the 600 04. 5. I used the an Aeroturbine in place of the cat. and a 51" Donaldson straight thru muffler. The sound is very nice. Not much louder than stock at idle. On the gas it is louder, but nothing outrageous. IMO, the perfect exhaust note for a diesel without giving you a headache after 5 minutes. No drone at any rpm. If you wanted a little more noise than that, I would suggest the same setup only with the 38" Donaldson muffler. I suggest getting rid of the cat. if you can, it is really holding the engine back. Up to you on that one though. Hope this helps.

Fortunately most of the exhaust systems are virtually ALL bolt together. You really need not do any welding unless it is a personal preference. So, unless your are actually physically unable to do it, it is really not that big an undertaking. Just about 2 hours on a Sunday afternoon. So, you would not need to trust anyone but yourself. As far as exhaust sound if you don't like it LOUD definitely don't even consider a 5" system, and don't even think about a straight pipe of any sort! I would probably opt for a 4" with a muffler. I have heard that alot of people like the aeroturbine exhaust systems.

Have had the Banks system on the 99 for years and like it. Just installed on the 04 and it is very nice. Not to loud in the cab. Easy to install..... all SS but a little pricey.

4 Wheel Parts has the Banks system for just over 600 right nw - plus their new mag has a 20% off coupon in it. If you have one of their stores locally, you should be able to get one for under 600.

I just installed a new Diamond eye Dual exhaust set up and with power box of it has no drone almost as quiet as stock but with rumble and with power box on still no drone but has mean rumble

Lexington, thats almost home. Before you change anything on your truck, you should sit down and determan what you want, and what you can and can not put up with.

Bottom line is any, yes any aftermarket exhaust system will result in and increased sound level in the cab. Also, be aware that you will have a 99% chance of getting a DRONE when the truck is in the 2000 rpm range, and a louder drone when towing. If you are still willing to give up your silance, then look around on the links page of this web site. There are many diesel shops that sell exhaust systems. Also do not limit yourself to just the paid advertisers, look for the exhaust makers home pages and see what is available to you. I installed a Hogg Performance stainless steel 4" system, it is built of very high standards and the fit and finish was first rate. The system cost a little more then some, but it is a one time expense and well worth the differance. I went with there quiet muffler, it sounds nice but not that loud on the inside. There is a drone at 2000-2100 rpm. I installed an Aero Turbine muffler (also ss) in front of the system muffler, it helped alot with the drone, but it is still there. To further help in reducing the drone, I installed sound absorbing/heat barriers over each muffler and add some insulation to the cab. Now it is great, and the sound level is better then stock. This wasn't a huge project for me, but it did take some time and money to complete, just be awhere.

Can't agree wiht you more on some shops that do exhaust work and what the put on the road quality wise. You might consider one of our cat back "600" systems that just bolts on using the factory hangers, we weld all of the hangers on our pipes to reuse the factory mounts and the installation couldn't be easier to do. Do it yourself and save the install money. We also just got our first shipment of cat back "600" duals if you have a 4 x 4 if that interests you. If you leave the cat on place the drone question shouldn't be an issue either, although we do have a cat test pipe if you want it to be strong and loud, everybody's different so we try to have different set ups based on what the customer needs/wants.

I WAS WONDERING MARK C. WHAT IS THE CAT. BACK 600 SYSTEM AND IF YOU INSTALLED THE AEROTURBINE MUFFLER IN FRONT IN LPACE OF THE CAT. WOULD THAT VOID YOU WARRANTY. I HAVE A 600 WITH THE CAT. AND WANT TO RUN STRAIGHT PIPE FROM TURBO OUT BUT A LITTLE AFFRAID TO VIOD WARRANTY.

The CAT is as stupid as it sounds, I straight piped on the weekend and left the CAT on it is Raspy as hell, So off w/ the CAT this week!!!!!!

Your truck already come with a full stock 4" system. Word is the CAT induces almost NO restriction because of it's straight through honeycomb design.



Since you are concerned about drone you have to be very careful. Look into a different muffler only. Save your money. You could do the elimination kit to see if you like straight pipe but since you're concerned with drone, I doubt you will.



Me... . I absolutely love my 5" straight exhaust with the trash can on the end. Drone and all! Don't like it when I drive by? you get the train horn... . make a face and you get soot... . well... not yet.

You pull the cat more than likely at most dealers you will have a warranty issue, that's why we have a cat back system. We do ahve the test pipe for racing etc. The 6. 0 Ford has a horrible down pipe before their cat, so we built a down pipe that connects to the factory cat on it and the dealers are OK with that as well, fortunately for Dodge owners the factory down pipe is pretty darn good (bad for us though) and there really isn't any need to replace it performance advantage wise anyway. My opinion only, but don't bother with the aeroturbine, no MPG gains over any other muffler that I have ever seen and very expensive for a muffler too. Remember this is my opinion, so no flames please. The 600 system bolts right on and does an excellent job of flow while keeping the cat in place (your option) and has a nice tone as well.

Cat is not restrictive? Someone feeding you some you know what. Take a look at it if you get a chance. I really find it hard to believe how the Cummins actually runs well with the thing. Regardless of what people say about the aeroturbine, I think it is a good investment. I didn't buy it for the mpg increase, only to kill the drone, which it did. There is no drone with my new exhaust, and it is straight thru. I couldn't be happier with the setup. If there are warranty issues, just put the cat back on, simple. Check this thread for what I have done.

No drone and a nice sound as well. Not too much, but just right. My first suggestion if at all possible, get rid of the cat, it's only holding you back. HTH.

The current versions of cats on all three diesel truck from DC, Ford and GM have pretty decent flowing cats especially as compared to the older style cats out there in the past. Removing it does improve flow but not at nearly the rate it used to on the old style cats that were prone to cloggin up anyway. We are currently in process on a resonator that cure the drone for those folks that have it, it will be in stainless and it will be very cost effective too.
