I want to do something to my exhaust system to give it a better sound, reduce back pressure and hopefully get a little increase in mileage too. Colorado Diesel has AFE's 4" exhaust kit for $400, which sounds like a good price and they said it is a good kit. I am planning on keeping things in stock form so my question is do I just change to a Magnaflow muffler or something similar, or just change the whole exhaust system. I want to keep things relatively quiet inside for the long trips and that is what concerns me with the 4" exhaust system.

What should I do? Is getting rid of the factory muffler going to give me a considerably better amount of exhaust flow or should I just bite the bullet and change it all.

Sorry so long.

TIA

I'll second that call to Rip. I'm running the 4 inch Diamond Eye system and love it. Got that throaty sound but not obnoxious. I can only tell it's louder in the cab when the rpm's are between 1200 and 1600. Above that I can't hear it. It would also have been a very easy kit to install if I hadn't run into a little clearance trouble with my goosneck hitch. Reasonably priced too.

BANKS. There kit also gets rid of the restricted ELBOW at the turbo. No else's does!!. Was a instant mpg increase with a real MELLOW not loud tone. More then 4 bills though. By the time you buy the 4 inch ELBOW they kinda are the same price. They DEALED with me when I bought mine.

Jman:

I was at Co Diesel last week and they were just finishing up putting on a 5 inch afe on Tylers new truck. It sounded good. I went there to talk to them about exhaust and shocks so perfect timing. They also told me that they just put a 4 inch on Fuzz's truck. With as much as you hear about drone I wanted to check with Fuzz and see what he thought about it. Went over to his place last night and checked it out. We hopped on the freeway (unloaded) and in the cab it didn't sound any different than my stock one. Outside it was a deeper tone and a bit louder but not much. He said it looked like it dropped his egts some and he didn't notice any in cab noise difference but he had only driven a very short distance since he had it put in. He is heading out of town in a week or two pulling that heavy 5vr of his and would let me know how that went with egts and sound level.

Scott,

Which muffler did you get from Diamond Eye?? Since you have a gooseneck hitch can I assume that you have towed heavy with exhaust on??

Thanks,

Fireman

Gut the stock muffler, lol it's free!

Sounds really good outside the cab and not even noticable inside the cab with the windows up. Gives kind of a chambered/resonated sound, deep and throaty. I've had compliments on the sound. RBatelle has heard it, ask him what he thinks?

I did this before gages, but I'm betting that gutting a 4 pass muffler made flow less restricted!

4" stainless steal

No joke,Kenny at Turbo Auto Diesel has 4"stainless exhaust Magnaflow system for 385. 00 plus shipping. He's in Phx. AZ.

That's a steal for stainless!!

Alan in AZ

Do you have a phone number or email address for us. If this is a complete stainless kit and that is the right price he may be in for a lot of business if the word gets out!

I have tomorrow off so I may give Rip a call and get his opinion.

Thanks for all the responses. :D

Fireman, my muff is a 4 inch straight through. I'm not really up on the terms but I think they called it "louvered"? Anyhow, I've pulled it hard and am still happy. I don't hear it in the cab at high rpm's. Got a nice low end growl to it too.

-Scott

Well I called Turbo Auto Diesel about the Magnaflow system and it is true, BUT it doesn't include the 4" downpipe or a tip so the costs of those two pieces get the cost up over $500. They told be it is 3. 5" to the muffler and 4" the rest of the way.

Still a very good price on a good system if you are wanting something to replace the stock system that is of higher quality and get a better sound.

Diesel Nut, how much do the Areoturbines cost and what is the greatest improvement. What exactly does it replace and are there any draw-backs,

I got exhaust parts from Diesel Power Products and put on an Aeroturbine, Ford PSD intermediate pipe and a 4" straight-thru muffler because I didn't want it very loud.

Dave figured out that the PSD intermediate pipe would probably work to replace the stock muffler and align the system corrently for a straight-thru muffler, so he gave me a deal on one to test his theory and it worked like a charm.

We made a recording of my truck and put it on his site if you want to listen.

Just buy a Banks system. Comes from the TURBO back. Elbow and all. Fits like a glove and tone is just enough to notice. Lifetime warranty and 50 state Epa legal etc. Flows over 900cfm compared to 300 cfm for stock. Was a instant 1 to 2mpg gain over stock.
