Does wrapping the exhaust pipe down from the turbo with insulation make any difference?

If so, what?

I have a Jardine system coming and the best time to wrap is before it is installed.

Air flows with less restriction over a hot surface, therefore wrapping your down pipe will increase flow. Air temp will also be reduced underhood, harmonic resonation will be reduced (ie: it will be quieter, with less or no drone) Wrapping from the elbow down (including the elbow) 3-4Ft should do the trick. Stainless Steel safetywire is the hot set up for keeping everything wrapped up nice. Don't forget to get some of the headerwrap silicone spray to protect it from moisture.

Originally from JC Whitney in Chicago. Tecertly I found it at a Speed Shop.

Call Thermo Tec at 800-274-8437 for further info. They can tell you who is selling it in your area.

I swear by exhaust wrap too. I have my downpipe wrapped. I use a 4. 5" hose clamp to secure it. Also have the turbo & exhaust covered with Geno's exhaust blanket. Summit Racing is a good place to buy it.

I like the DEI Wrap. A 2" X 50" roll is more than enough to do the downpipe.

TIP: It's a hell of alot easier to wrap the downpipe BEFORE it's hung. :)

header wrap

I think that the wrap is the same materal as the fire blanket I us to prevent burning up cable trays and other things when I am welding or cutting. I have seen the insulating materal that is used to make gaskets for the doors in the furnace also.

I have thought that I would use the materal for insulating the exhaust in my Miata that runs under the seats.

The only thing that I have been told that by insulating the exhaust you elevate the tempature to where the exhaust may not last as long. I dont remember which component in the steel that burns up.

I have been told that there are two types of insulation, mass and reflective. Generally the steam piping uses both.

I did mine last fall. Did two layers from the turbo to the muffler. Wrapped the first layer going one direction, the second layer going the other. Sprayed the whole thing with silver high-temp paint (bar-b-que paint). At the ends I use SS pipe clamps.

Don't know if it helped, but I felt better about it! Used the Thermo Tec stuff, I believe.
