I need some input in upgrading the exhaust, maybe doing away with the muffler. I know I should go to a 4" pipe. Should that be all the way to the turbo or just to the muffler?
If I do that, do I have to change the turbo housing? Will just doing away with the muffler, and leaving the pipe 3" help at all?

What year truck. CAT or no?

There are many members running 3" with a good muffler, or no muffler, and a "free flowing" CAT who are satisfied with their EGT's even with their power mods.

John_P is at 381hp with 3" (Although I think he looking for 4"). Steve StL is 3" with the muffler removed still with the resonator and he dynoed at 313hp. MGM is 302hp with 3" and no EGT problems. Joe Donnelly (sp?) says the 3" is fine up to at least 350hp. Mark Chappel at TST also says the 3" is fine.

Anyway enough info on why you do not HAVE to go with 4".

I'd go 4" CAT back (depending on year). I spoke with one member who started with a 4" CAT back on his BOMBed 97 and then went 4" turbo to tail and said he did not notice any significant difference between the two. He did say the 4" CAT back made a big difference in EGT's and lowered boost at highway speeds, therefore less back-pressure.

I'm sure many others will offer info here, but this just a few of my observations here.

FWIW - I chose to go 4" turbo to tail. I don't have it on yet, but I'm still questioning my decision. Mayeb I could have save the extra $$$ to spend on other BOMBing. Too late now. Oh well.

Sorry so long.

It depends on your options and personal prefrence more than anything. I'm very mildly bombed and I have 4" turbo to tail but I did it more for the sound and the fact that it was available at the time. The whole system was only $396 delivered so I couldn't pass it up. Like Cooker said you really don't have to go 4" but it does sound nice and then you don't have to worry about your exhaust nomatter how much you bomb. Have fun with it whatever you decide.

I cleared 100K mi while the board was down. Jardine Performance 4" exhaust (sounds just like a Pete, it's great) :) Schied Diesel put timing to *15 (by timing light), put gauges in on the A pillar (trans temp, boost, and egt) They also set my stock plate up (40 hp 150 ft/lb gain) OH, what a difference a day makes :-D

Hey Sneaky,
Check with your local Walker dealer, ask them about a P/N 54 150 4" tailpipe. Its part of their 4" catback set-up. I'm running it on my Ramcharger along with the 3"in 4"out resonator off a '98. I'm 3" turbo to just past X-member for clearance. This set-up gives me no back-pressure, normal conversation at road speeds and a nice throaty tone. The tailpipe is around 50 or 60 bucks which beats a lot of the high dollar aftermarket stuff. Had to put on my own hangers but everything else went smooth. Something to consider. Jones
