i'm looking to replace my stock exhayst with an aftermarket setup what are you guys running banks?, magnaflow, mbrp. also ease of install ? any help would be great i have an 04. 5 325/600 qc/sb 4wd thanksOo. :-laf

I first removed the cat. converter and the muffler, and ran it straight. I really liked it, but it was a little loud. I bought a Banks muffler and it sounds better than stock, but a little too quiet. I'm looking for something a little in between the Banks and straight piped. JH

unless you plan to go for it my vote is stock with a strait pipe instead of cat and muffler (cheap), then get a tip. you already have a 4" back muffler and you can save your money for something eles more worth while. but if you want one anyway i preffer magnaflow but there are many good brands. i am happy with my 5" that i have just hated the clamps that came with the kit i had to replace them almost as soon as i put it on (bad design).

Leave the cat on, remove the muffler, replace with a straight pipe. No warranty issue then, the cat is in place so it remains "legal".

All of my trucks were stock before. The straight pipe sounds awesome, it has a very DEEEEEP tone at low rpm and it rips wide open. The noise level in the cab is hardly any different, nobody the rides in it with the windows up will ever notice a difference. I towed 15k lbs with it through the mountains and never found it to drone or make obnoxious noises, though I am sure it was loud to those I passed:-laf

Our trucks already have a more than adequate 4" system. I also like that it looks stock, but sounds much better. If you drive in the city a lot, and don't want to annoy fellow drivers, it might be a little loud. I like it though, wouldn't ever spend the $$ for a "system".

Well, for one, would it cancel his warranty? Second, there is no better sound then stock. I know, it's personal preference.

There is NO warranty issue with replacing your exhaust. You can also remove the Cat and not void your warranty - however, you will have violated some kind of federal law (fairly low chance of getting caught, unless you have emissions testing).

If you do end up replacing what you have, I'd consider buying that banks from you (I personally loved the sound of mine on the 03).

I had the MBRP 409 stainless installed(turbo back)on my 2004 and love it,a little more noise than stock. coobieOo.

I respectfully disagree, you CAN VOID your warranty if you remove the cat. Do some checking on this one. :)coobie

I have removed the cat and did a mbrp muffler. Sound is great with no resonance. Not obnoxious for me or anyone around untill I am running 75 thru the mountians with the jeep on the trailer, then it gets loud but not too bad.

Is it technically feasible? YES! But I have never heard of anyone having had it happen (doesnt mean it hasnt, though). And judging by the number of people on here who have lost their Kitty's, I'd venture to guess that we would have heard about such a scenario already. I think that the Kitty (in regards to overall vehicle warranty) falls under the same scenario as aftermarket air filter systems (which MANY dealers sell).

My service manager told me that it would only become an issue if I brought it in and said it wouldnt pass emissions. In that scenario, he would have to void my emissions warranty (not the entire vehicle warranty). He also advised me to keep the old Cat, and put it back on when I sold it.

OK, here is what I have done on my 06 CTD. I started with an MBRP COOL DUAL cat back, a SC FLASHPAQ and a BDOG OUTLOOK monitor. With the SC on tow safe program I have plenty of power to pull my 11. 5k camper around in the rocky mtn's. However, the egt's must be watched carefully. SC'S says that I can use this program and still pull the full gcwr of the vehicle. I wouldn't without gauges. It gets hot easily. So after talking with a couple of diesel shops, I was advised to go with a turbo back 5" to cool things down(nice job of running the pipe through the cat for a straight through exhaust). I took it for a test run around the block with the shop owner and ran it through the gears into fourth. The egt's hit 1150. No relief! This was an unloaded vehicle. I was also told that the "drone" that I was experiencing during towing were attributed to the split in the pipe after the muffler and that with the single 5" this would decrease significantly. It did not. It was actually worse. I love the sound when driving unloaded, but with a load it is terrible between 2000 and 2500 rpm's.

As far as the egt's go, the shop owner believes that the outlook monitor is not accurate. Since the outlook's back light is going out and it is hard to see in the day time, I am returning it and will try some regular gauges to see if the egt's are accurate.

After all of this, I would say to be very cautious when doing performance enhancements. Start with an a-pillar with gauges, a programmer or module, and watch egt's. Then maybe a muffler delete. Removing the cat hasn't seemed to make a difference. This is just what I have experienced.

I picked up a Walker muffler from NAPA P/N 21171 made the world of difference. I had the truck str8 piped for about 2 months, and HATED it.

I used the Geno's Garage Muffler Delete and it sounds great, mounts easily and sounds great. I left the cat in place and the sound is a little more throaty than with the stock muffler but not bad. I cannot tell a difference while towing with the windows up or down most of the time, plus your ears will get used to little extra pretty quick. EGT's seemed to go down a little and mileage seemed to move up a little. The exhaust on the truck is pretty good, so not much more need than a muffler delete. Oh, I did put a MBRP 5" SS Tip on the truck, looks good and works well and a lot less money than a "system" either cat back or other wise. Scotty
