I have an '03 HO 6sp with Smarty JR. I know that I have 3. 5" from the turbo to the muffler. Do I need to get a full 4" system or just get a different muffler or resonator. I just had a resonator (off of an '01) on my '97. It was quiet enough. Or is the stock muffler ok. Or is money better spent on a CFM intake. I plan on getting an Amsoil air filter. I have the toilet flange mod on my stock air box for more air.

it depends on how you plan to use the truck.

the 3. 5" exhaust will keep the exhaust velocity up and spool the turbo quicker if you run empty all the time.

the full 4" will work better under load.

If you do not mod much beyond what is in your signature, and you are about performance per dollar, just get a new muffler and save yourself a bunch of cash. I have not seen anyone post data indicating a need for bigger than the 3. 5" elbow below the 500 hp range. The muffler in my sig works great for me. Although the turbo seems to spool quicker, I was not able to document lower EGTs while towing my 8,500# trailer up a 6% grade.

If you want the bling of a new system or a 4" system by all means go that way. Bling can be good too, as long as your expectations are aligned accordingly.

If you just do the muffler, have the new muffler installed as far forward as possible to reduce/elimate drone.

Has anyone gutted the stock muffler to see what it looks like inside?
Lots of packing and bits of pipe/baffle to "muffle" the noise. Yes, I cut mine in half when I took it off. The rig is a LOT louder with the flow thru muffler now.
