Hello Fellow TDR Members:

I have a 2001 Turbo, and would like to know if removing the muffler improves performance or just makes more noise. Of course all the muffler shops are going say it's great, since they sell them.

I know it does alot for a gasser, but they turn many RPM'S compared to a diesel. I hate to replace practically new parts for no good reason. I tow a 5th wheel and would'nt want a roar all day long on a trip. I trust someone from the TDR rather than a muffler shop. Your imput would be appreciated.

Thanks:

JimP.

Well I took my muffler and resinator off and ran a straight pipe and I like it,you can't hardly hear it in the cab, andit will lower EGT temps a bit,and I believe it does help mileage a little.

It sounds great:D

Just do it!

Jim,

Here's what I did with the help and guidance of fellow member, Johnrv4 - who did the prototype for this on his truck first. I think he got some of these ideas from Blackcloud. We removed the pipe and muffler from the resonator back. It comes off all in one piece with the help of a torch. It can go right back on anytime, although mine won't be going back on! We put on a 4" Walker tailpipe - made for our trucks - all the right bends, attached to a piece of 4" aluminized pipe to replace the muffler. We left the stock 3" on from the turbo to the resonator. We then put a 5" chrome tip on to finish it off (made for a motorhome). It sounds excellent! I left the resonator on to possibly battle the drone problem that some guys get. I also think it looks enough like a muffler to maybe get by if Johnny Law looks underneath. ;) :D

I'm like you, I don't like to replace perfectly good parts just for show/sound. But, the sound is just too good, and this whole operation only cost me $100. I do think I gained 1-2lbs of boost, but beyond that, I can't say there is any proven performance gain. Some guys will claim better mileage, faster spool-up, etc... If so, I say great! The sound a look of that 5" tip are enough of a kick for me - any other benefits are a bonus!:D

I got the 5" from Diesel Pro that starts out 3" then goes directly to 4" for the downpipe and at the cross member it flares out to 5" all the way out to stock location.

Thanks for all the exhaust replies:

After reading several threads discussing many different types and size's, I think a good sound is the greatest benefit. I leave home for winter after exmas, and I'm going to pay attention to Dodge turbos in the RV parks and try and find a sound I like.

Thanks again:

JimP
