Its about time to replace the restrictive factory exhaust system. I am looking for a 3 1/2 or 4 inch system. I would prefer the 4", but I don't want to much noise, or to pay too much. The Cummins runs best with as little of intake and exhaust restriction as possible. The turbo and EGT’s also favor more flow. No straight pipe for me. But, I wouldn't mind if it where a little louder and hade more of that Cummins sound. I want one that uses the factory hanger locations (easy install anyway), has a straight through muffler, and exits about the same location as stock. Stainless is too expensive, so that is out of the question. I was thinking maybe BD or Rip Rook, probably not Banks. What are some good deals out there? I only know of one 4" system, the Rip Rook. Any help would be appreciated. Any other suggestions?

I think that the Jardine 3. 5" system is the sweetest sounding one out there, I am really happy with it, and installation was a snap. But, if I keep trying to force the most I can out of my truck, I may have a 4" system built for it because it just makes sense

How much did the Jardine exhaust set you back? Is there any "drone"? Did it come with a chrome tip? I like the look of the turn-down tips, and the way they direct the smoke at the ground, and not the sidewalk and the car next to you. Not that it really matters. I could by an aftermarket tip if I really wanted one, I guess.



Anyone with the BD exhaust have any comments? What about the Rip Rook?

Walker??

I am just going to price out some pieces from Walker that some other have posted in the past. They are supposed to have 4" tail sections etc so I was going down to the local shop to see if he can get em... I'll let you know. .

(edit) From my calls to BD the 3. 5 system is only from about 1 ft infront of the muffler and over the axle, they don't have a turbo back system for the 1st gens. . Not too many do.

Walker 4" Tailpipe

Lil' Dog - The 4" tail pipe for first gens is Walker #54 150 and is available through NAPA special order. Should run $50-55. It appears to be mandrel bent (super smooth bends), is well made and fits great. Jones, a fellow TDR member told me about it and I put one on to replace the stock crunched pipe, and somehow lost the muffler in the process . It is a big improvement in the looks dept. and I plan to add a 5" tip. Everyone says "your truck sounds like a semi!" I take that as a compliment.

So would the BD be from the down pipe back? That is all I am looking for. I may replace the down pipe latter, but not just yet.

Does the walker just replace the section over the axle? Is there a complete (down pipe back) system available? How much? Did you notice any performance gains, or cooler EGT’s with your mods?

I'm running the BD system. It was installed in ohhh. . '94'-'95'.

Its 3 1/2" mandrel bent, from the bottom of the downpipe, back.

It has a BD muffler on as well, with a turn down tip. I like it myself.

If I was to change I'd take the 4". In my opinion the 4" has a somewhat deeper tone to it. My younger brother has the 4" Banks system which is what I'm going by here.

All in all the BD system works/worked fine for me. I have replaced the muffler once since new. (1 year warranty on that)

That happened about 2 1/2 years ago.

It also is capable of handling the upper HP limits of the 1st Gen exhaust output from what I'm told.

I had it straight on my 89 with a 3. 5 mandrell over the rear axle and chrome tip, and loved it!!! But it I'm still on the fence as to do it on this one. . It is a good head turner as everyone hears the straight pipes on the Gen2 trucks, they don't expect it on the Gen1's. Especially my old 89 with the different grill etc. .



I probably will go with either a very straight through muffler or a straight pipe to the 4". I was hoping to get a short 4" muffler and flare the pipe near the transmission. We'll see what magic the shop can do for me. .



I was sold on the BD till you posted about the 4", thats the size I need... Heheheh.

Smoky - Yes, it just replaces the section over the rear axle. Sorry, don't know about availability of the rest of the system. It did seem to help in response and spool-up. My truck still has no guages (now I've opened myself up for a flogging) so I can't give you EGT differences. Guages are coming soon - as in before I take off on trips through the mountains with my trailer. I like the Isspro's EV look and lighting.



Lil' Dog - I sure love the sound of mine now. Always driving with the rear slider window open and the stereo turned down so I can listen to the Cummins. It would be too loud for some this way, and it sounds like a straight thru muffler (like a Dynomax) is the way to go.



I cut mine before the muffler, added enough 3" to reach the new tailpipe and used a 3 x 4" adapter from NAPA to connect them, and welded it all together. From the side or rear, all you see is 4" even thru the wheelwell. I'd still like to replace the rest with 4" or at least some smoother bends around the transfer case.

I bought my BD exhaust 2 years ago, wish I had built my own 4" system after I got it installed, it is not 3 1/2" all the way back, it is 3" mandrel bent from the down pipe to the back of the transfercase then 3 1/2" the rest of the way out, a friend had a local shop build him a 4" system from the downpipe back and it sounds a lot nicer. BD says that anything larger than 3" won't fit by the transfercase, his 4" fits but is a close fit.

The Jardine was not more then 350, I cannot remember the price. Nope, no drone, the muffler that came with that kit was awesome . I have the BD kit on my other truck, and comparatively speaking... . wish it was a Jardine. The BD came with a chrome tip, the Jardine came out the side like the factory. Do yourself a favor with whatever exhaust you install, go to the truck shop and buy the correct size stainless band type exhaust clamps so that you do not smash the pipe... . this allows for easy modifications later on

I was surfin around and found this website truckperformance and they show a 3. 5" system from the turbo back for our rigs.



Check it out and see what you think. The system is by Flowmaster. Sounds pretty good.

Mine was $325 installed including chrome tip. And muffler. Did not include down pipe as I got the BD down pipe with the exhaust brake. Sounds real nice to me.

I just have to say this but the best sounding exhaust is the stacks. Just my opinion. Less pipe for me (one stack) less restriction, better sound. No smoke on the ground.

After working around my buddies new Duramax (Oh, by the way, I put it in its place ) and my dad's truck with their OEM exhaust, I hate them Working behind them is like being in a closet with the fumes and the door locked Now seriously, with my stack I can get a good healthy wiff of perfume and still hook up to my trailer without chocking

Of course all of this is my opinion and to each their own, I just wanted a stack ever since I was young, and gettin' on it with the rear slider open is heavenly

The guy that did my 4" exhaust moved to Idaho. If you want I will get his phone no. for you and exactly where he lives. His work is absolutely excellent. My 4" has been on for almost a year now and still no rattles or leaks, the fit by the transfer case is VERY tight, like 3/8 of an inch. I just had him put a 5" magnaflow stainless tip on mine. Gotta love it.

What do you think of it?
