New TD owner, draining water???

first things first. i just got my truck in March of 2002 and i love it. I am trying to get some info on exhaust. I am not ready to do anything to it yet, but when the time comes i would like to know what is best.

My question is: should i go with a complete system or striaght pipe it? advantages or disadvantages to either? i will be towing so which would help? any information would be greatly appreciated.

If you like the sweet sound of the Cummins breathing through straight pipes that is the way to go, it is really loud but nice:D if you don't want the noise then put in a straight through truck muffler, it will cut the noise with out creating back pressure.

The 4" makes the sound deeper over the stock 3", straight either way will lower EGT's over the stock setup.

hey guys thanks for the info so far. now to continue with some other questions.

I heard some good and bad about Banks exhaust. what does anyone think? How about Bullydog or now i see Flowmaster has some kits out there too. I want it to sound good and help power too. I don't wanna spend a whole lot on a kit but if its better than i'll suck it up. One more thing if i do go the straight pipe route will i have to repipe the whole truck or can i just cut the muffler out and have a section of pipe put in?

Thanks again for the help any info is greatly appreciated.

If you go with the stock 3" for a straight pipe then just pull the muffler & resanator out measure the length then go down to your local muffler shop and have them cut a piece that length and flare each end to 3" I. D. Then slap it into place and clamp it down and ENJOY the sweet sound.

If you go with a 4" system then yes the whole thing will have to be replaced. if you go this rout then you can get the down pipe at PIERS As for the rest of the system its up to you.

I have yet to hear of a BAD 4" exhaust. I have a JRE and love it. I will be taking the muffler out soon. Its loud with it, but not loud enough.

In general, under about 330-350 hp (at the wheels), 3" diameter is plenty. Replacing the muffler and resonator with a section of 3" pipe and the 3" Walker 21468 will give you about all the performance related benefit there is to get. If you pick a different muffler, I recommend one with a perforated core, no louvers sticking into the flow path, and no neck-down inside. These suggestions are based on dyno testing, not just seat of the pants or the ear (more noise must make more power  )

Hey Larry

What Joe said is right on the mark. I dumped my muf but left my resonator in line. It sounds very good but you can't tell at idle.

When you mash the loud peddle then you notice it... it's very cool diesel music.

I kept the resinator and put 4 inch straight pipe after that. It sounds beastly at idle and hard acceleration, but crusing around its a nice mellow tone. If you do go for a complete 4 inch system, or just want a certain piece, check out Rip Rook's stuff at www.sourceautomotive.biz

Thanks to everyone who has replied i am getting great info from everyone. Rip Rooks stuff looks good and seems to be fairly priced too. thanks again and keep the info coming!!

Hey everyone. One quick question. Has anyone heard Rip Rook's exhaust system with the muffler? I was wondering what it sounded like. Is it fairly loud? I want to hear my cummins, but i am not sure if the straight pipe will be too loud for me. Thanks again

You need to build a signature see we can see what your starting with. In this case the year.

If you have a fairly new rig and the exhaust system is not rusted beyond "driveway do it yerself" work then look into Geno's and get the replacement pipe so you can remove your own muffler and replace it with the "insert" pipe. This is inexpensive and you will hear what we are all talking about. Loudness is subjective between different ears. I happen to find the loss of just the muffler just fine however, I left my resonator inplace. Now I'm considering removing the resonator so I can say I'm truly "straight-piped". I assure you when you do remove your muffler... . it's not a big deal... . my wife never even noticed it... I had to tell her I did it and she still says it's about the same!

I hope this will help. I am new to all this and just figured out what a signature was. My rig is brand spanking new not even 4,000 miles yet so driveway work should be easy for me. Thanks

Mine noticed

William,

My wife noticed, she asked " what did you do to the truck, it sounds different?" I was so proud of her untill she asked "Why?"

Good advice so far here (as usual):D

I would just keep one thing in mind when replacing your muffler, a Flowmaster muffler is a great design for naturally aspirated gas engine, good power and sound to boot. However, turbo engines don't respond well at all to a chambered muffler, so go with something like a Walker perforated straight-through design, like Joe D mentioned.

I replaced my stock muffler/cat with a straight pipe and a 3" Walker and love it. Sound is a little louder but not bad at all, and I saw a very significant egt drop (along with quicker turbo spoolup).

thanks for all the info

Hey everyone!!

i wanted to say thank you to all the guys who replied to my questions. You provided so much info and it helped me out greatly in my decision. As for the final result when the time comes i think i am going to go with Rip Rook's 4" system. He seems like he offers the most bang for the buck. I just would like to know now what it sounds like? If anyone knows please pass it on to me. Thanks again. Oo.

straight piped

Hey all,

i had said previously that i was going to get Rip Rook's 4" system and that still holds true, but i am itching for some noise now!! I don't want to spend alot of money and i saw Geno's has a muffler elimination kit for $69. Has anyone used this kit? does it install easily? Would this be a better option than having a muffler shop do it? Should i leave the resonator or ditch it too? If i do get rid of the resonator i'll have to have another piece of pipe made up correct? Thanks ahead of time for any info on this kit.

Larry

Larry... Thats what I did. I removed the muff but I left in the resonator it sounded really cool and the turbo really responded quicker too. Now as you see with my new 4" Banks I'm already considering removing the Banks Dynaflo because it's too quiet.

I believe muffler removal on the stock set up is the best performance modification you can do for the money spent. ;)

Besides if Evan Beck says it's the "monster sound" thing to do, then you can bet money on it:D

LJ;

First off, I have a 97 (12 valve) and they sound diferent from the 24's.

I don't have Rip's system, but I do have a similar full 4" system. I do have the same Allied muffler that Rip uses in his system (verified by email).

The Allied muffler is a 4" straight through with the louvers in the airflow that JD cautions to avoid.

I'm not satisfied with the sound. It sounds really good at idle and up to about 2,500 rpm. At that point is gets a low hiss that resembles a joint leak, but it is not. I used SS band clamps on all the joints and the downpipe is a tight fit on the turbo elbow. It may be the bends in my downpipe and tailpipe combined with the 5" tip that sticks out even with the rear tire.

Cannot say at this point what is the true cause.

Another option is to do a "cat back". Walker also makes an inexpensive tailpipe and a 4" muffler. I believe your system goes 4" between the resonator and muffler.

diesel on

edit

I tried going to a 3" straight pipe. That awfull racket was far worse than the hiss in my 4" system. Given a choice, I'll keep the hiss.

i have a new thing that i am now considering. I am thinking about 5" stacks. I saw a guys truck with them and they look awesome. Does anyone have any advice? good or bad? i really like the look and with no muffler it sounded great!!
