Need advice... . Driving to work this morning (6 miles @ 45 mph) the truck seemed to lose power and had a wierd odor. Once at work I popped the hood and noticed the entire exhuast manifold is blue. Coolant temp was holding at 185, oil pressure was fine, charge air hose are tight. Truck is a stock except for K&N in stock air box and lost silencer ring... 2002 quad cab 4x4 auto with 3. 54s, no guages yet, 15000 ml.

What should I look at? What could have caused this? any advice appreciated.

What color is the turbo and the exhaust pipes after it? Is anythng else noticeable different? Take a look in the tailpipe. Is it full of black soot, have little soot, or have none at all? Did someone stuff a potato up your tailpipe??? Do you have any evidence of exhaust trying to get out of the joints and seams in the exhaust?

Are you sure that the manifold wasn't blue before this? I have an older rig, and have no clue what color the manifold would be on your year.

You can also check the air box and plumbing for something plugging the air intake or plugging the air filter (not necessarily dirty, but something like leaves, mouse nest, dead critter :eek: , etc. )

Usually heat damage is caused by lack of air, excessive fuel, plugging exhaust, or bad timing.

Good luck.

Sounds like the turbo seized up. Remove the inlet tube and see if you can turn it. Good thing for warranty. Make sure they check it out good, things may have gotten very hot, I suspect much more damage than just the manifold and tubo due to high egts.

Mine was black when new and as it broke in the manifold started turning a deep royal blue. I went to Cummins and was told that I must have finally put it under a heavy load and burnt the paint off. Not to worry its normal. Well Yea I bought the truck to tow with.

Thanks for the advice. This is my first diesel so I’m still learning what is ‘normal’, maybe I’m just paranoid. My wife says it is an obsessive compulsive disorder…. I thought that’s what I was supposed to do with this truck.

The dealer has the truck today, they said the same things stated here and added that cheap (low cetane)(sp) could cause this as well.

What Nathan said, only, after a few months the wife will start saying things like, "I wish you hadn't gotten in with that crowd, you're getting too many bad ideas. " and then, " YOUR ARE SPENDING HOW MUCH ON THAT (fill in the blank) FOR THE TRUCK?" :-{}

Just rememeber - IMPROVEMENTS :D

It's not that you really need to go 0-60 in 10 seconds with a 4 ton load attached, but it is nice to be able to if you want :D

the wife is actually looking forward to the improvements, only the disturbing comment was "not to much smoke and no stacks" other than that the christmas list has been approved by the CFO. Almost crashed the truck when she said "we need to show those other trucks whos boss".

She is used to it be now, after I blew up the 8hp briggs on the lawn tractor I 'dropped' in a 20hp v twin kolher. It's ugly but it works.
