I am considering purchase of a 2001 3500 dually automatic 3:55 rear ratio. What specific things should I be looking out for, and what fuel mileage should I expect from this combination?

check for 53 block--- tendency to crack

condition of trans, lots go out around 100-150k

VP44 go out, (mine just did at 140k cost $1500 to get it replaced)

lift pump (attempt to start. . crank once then listen for pump noise, will last about 20 seconds. )

anything else you can think of... service records

fuel filter replace every 10k at most.

OK, thanks. I have been in the lst Gen area, not sure what the "53 block" is, how do I tell if it has one? I have a VP44 equipped Cummins already, and it is shot at 40k miles!

Don,

There is a cast number below the VP44, you can see it from underneath the truck. Should be just above where the oil pan and the block come together and on my truck I found it again behind the oil filter during the last filter change. The 53 block was a bad cast, the wall of the block is too thin.

If you are going to tow heavy the 4:10's are better with the automatic. SNOKING

I haven't had a problem yet at 104. 5K miles and YES I have the 53 block. Still I keep an eye on it though.

My transmission still shifts great too. I have the 6spd, though so that's not a direct comparison I know.

Just lettin' ya know that if you pick up an 01 that's been treated right, it may be just like mine. Doesn't mean things won't go wrong, but for now, i have no problem getting in my rig and hooking up.

Don't know about dually's, but my stock rig had right over 20mpg during the summer.
