Actually, the engine wasn't even running! I stumbled across an instrument diagnostic routine that I had not heard of before on another bulletin board and thought that perhaps someone could find a use for it. Here's how it works: Hold down the trip odometer reset button with the ignition initially off. Then turn the ignition on while still holding down the button. When the odometer display shows chec, let go of the button. The instrument panel will then enter a diagnostic mode. It will check every segment of the LED in the odometer, cycle all the instrument panel lights, and then actually step up the tachometer and speedometer in increments until finally reaching 120 mph and 4000 rpms. Not quite sure what I just accomplished, but it works on my 2001 Ram and my wife's 1999 Durango. Next, I would like to figure out if I can play astroids on it.

:D

I think MSwanson is talking about the overhead trip computer too. Try pressing and holding UNITs then trun on the key. It might be you have to hold both buttons, then key up. I don't have what I need in front of me.

Anyway, the trip computer has a self-test feature similar to the cluster one posted above. That can tell you if there is a CCD data buss problem or something.

If it's not working at all, like no display lighting up, it could be a power/ground issue or it got disconnected somehow.

Good luck!

Thanks guys for the input.

Since I asked for help I have learned that the overhead unit and the cab running lights have no power to them. A new challenge, but no solution yet. Did the norm and checked fuses and breaker.

I have learned how to remove the overhead unit. Drop the front door, squeeze the two proturding tabs and slide the unit to the rear, all in one motion. If your lucky the unit will fall into your hands.
