The galvanized will work but isn't the best way to go,especially since nowadays a lot of pipe fittings are Chinese junk where the plating falls off easily. Best to go with brass or go to a tractor or hydraulic supply where you can get a fitting made of hydraulic grade steel.
 
Yes, that's the reason I don't want to use galvanized (the ones i found, anyway). They all looked like they had been hand carved by some 5 yr old (who knows, maybe they were... )

I don't think I'll have any trouble tapping, I've done it before, just never for pipe thread.

Their advice is right on the money. I just did this job with a 1/8 npt using a 5/16 drill bit. It came out perfectly even though I had never tapped anything before. Take it slow and pay attention.

Just an update...

I got everything installed today... works great! Thanks to all who helped.

ps: I actually cussed more messing with the boost guage than the egt probe... drillin' and tappin' was probably the easiest out of all the different chores involved.
 
We should have referance place on TDR for information like what Bryan Brenneman posted. How about it moderators and administrators?
