i've heard (from an owner of a 99 2nd gen) that cummins automatically warranties its engines to a 100K. what does this cover or not cover and is it transferrable to new owners? anybody have advice on 3rd party extended warranties? does Dodge offer factory extended warranties over 100K? planning on buying used and a little insurance seems almost mandatory, at least for the 1st 6 months...

Cummins doesn't warranty the engine DC does. It is for 5 years or 100k miles whichever comes first. As for buying the extended warranty my experience has not been real positive. Usually they exclude the most common failures, ie:electical items, wear out parts, etc... Mostly they will just cover "internally lubricated parts" and then you will have to prove that you did the required maintenance at the recommended intervals to keep your coverage intact. Read the fine print before you buy one so you don't get screwed.

Extended warranties for the most part are about as useful as a doorbell on an outhouse for a CTD. They work well for an 00 focus, but they are not going to cover anything particularly well. Keep in mind that they are most profitable for the dealership. they actually cost about 1/3 of what the consumer pays. Is it worth financing another 2k into the cost of your truck when, if maintained properly, the engine should have no problems? I dont think so. I have spent time in the auto financing world, and I really have not seen the extended warranty benefit the consumer so much that I believe in them for trucks like ours. They are really just a way for the dealership and the F&I department to make more profit- If you have any questions regarding a particular warranty or warranty company- shoot me PM and i will be happy to explain. By the way, A CTD with 4 wheel drive will also raise the cost of the warranty. ---just my 2 cents,

Extended Warranty

Hey Folks,

I am new to this site and to the CTD. Picked up my new '04 2500Quad CTD a month ago and love it! I know there are widely varying opinions on the value of extended warranties, but if you are looking for one www.eservicecontracts.com is the place to go. I purchased a 7/100,000 Maximum (covers everything but brake pads, paint, windshield wipers, etc. ) which is essentially a bumper to bumper extension for $1695. It is offered by a Dalhmer/Chrysler dealer in Iowa and they are marketing them as a volume item. It is the manufacture's warranty. This was at least $1K less than I could find locally. Just a for what it is worth.

You sound like you are happy with your new truck and it's extended warranty, that is great and I wish you luck with both. I think they bring "Peace of mind" to the new and use vehicle owner, weather they cover the right items or not. I have only had one experiance with extended warrantys and that was about fifteen years ago. We purchased a warranty on a vehical for about 4-500 dollars. Used it for the replacement of a starter and ignition switch that went bad. In our case the warranty was a wash, the cost of the repairs was about the same as the cost of the warranty, so nothing gained and really nothing lost. I have not taken out another extended warranty since, and so far have not needed one. The Dodge warranty seems to pretty comprehensive, and the extended warranty the dealer had seemed to very, very limited in what it covered. Basicly anything that failed because of "Normal wear" was excluded. Isn't all or most failures caused by wear? And wouldn't that make them "Normal"? Even the door hinges weren't covered, or the problems they could cause, because they were "Normal wear" items.

I suppose if it gives someone the extra peace of mind knowing that they have a extended warranty which may cover some future problems, when maybe it is a good ideal for that person. Each to their own, for everybody moves to a different beat.

extended warranties

I bought one for my 03, and learned this:

The one the dealer sells is the safest- too many of the warranty companies are not sound financially, or have problems with claims. The couple hundred you save is not worth the added worry- the exact reason you buy the warranty in the first place.

The Chrysler warranty is comprehensive, and since I have a 4X4 and a turbo, there are plenty of high end parts to break. On my old truck, the cost of a failed A/C compressor was worth the price of the warranty alone. And, the rental car coverage is nice anytime they are doing warranty work, even under your initial 36/36 coverage.

YMMV.
