Hi guys; I'll be picking up my truck in a couple of weeks and wonder what your opinions are with extended warranties. I'm sure the dealer will be anxious to sell me one but it looks like we can get a 50% discount on line thru chrysler. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Brett

The factory now covers the entire drivetrain for 5/100,000; rest for 3/36,000. That is already a pretty long time and a lot can happen to cause you to trade trucks by then. Most things that might go wrong outside of the above, say a module or switch after 3 years, wouldn't justify the extended warranty cost.

I bought a 6 year/125K extended warranty for mine b/c I am not hot rodding it and expect I will use the coverage. I trust the Cummins engine and drive train (which is warrantied to 100K)... but the rest of the truck is a different issue in my opinion. I always buy an extended warranty and I almost always break even on them... even on Honda's... . but I do shop around for the best deal and you do not have to buy from the same dealer where you get the truck in most instances. The point's raised about the Ram's powertrain warranty are valid, it is a good, long warranty but you can buy a wrap extended warranty that will "wrap around" the powertrain warranty and extend the 3/36K full warranty out to 5/100K... or you could do like I did and just put a full monty extended warranty on it. I did not do a Chrysler/Ram brand warranty, mine was a Custom Edge service contract offered by Warrantech. AmTrust Financial owns Warrantech and they are the factory extended warranty provider for Volvo, Mazda and AmTrust is underwriting and administering GM's new factory branded extended warranties (Chevy Care, GM Care, Buick Care) through Warrantech. Just do your research and get a solid company backing the warranty and try to find the sweet spot (deductible vs. premium cost and type/length of coverage) if you feel an extended warranty would be a value to you.

You have one year to buy an extended warranty. On my two dodge trucks the dealer called before the end of the year and offered the same warranty for half the price.

If you decide to purchase an extended warranty. Get a quote from here http://www.chryslerfactoryplans.com

They are genuine Chrysler/Ram Mopar Care extended warranty sold from a Dodge/Chrysler dealership in Michigan. Wholesale pricing since they sell nationwide and way cheaper than your selling dealer through finance.
