Extended warranty question

If you were buying a new truck would you buy an extended warranty? What needs to be covered for how long and how much should it cost?

I'm a new member planning to buy a new 3500 4x4 in a couple of months.

I don't know if they still have it but I got a 100K "wrap around" warranty. It was free if you use your truck for business. It covers the drivetrain other than the engine which is already covered. It was an incentive for a long time but I haven't herd anything lately.

When I ordered my 99 there was a $300 discount or the extended drivetrain warranty to 100k or 5 years. Knowing what snowplowing does to the drivetrain, I took the warranty option. Just had my first rear axle seal failure at 42k. Dumped lube into the right rear drum and ruined the pads. Warranty covered the rear pads (both sides) and the axle seal and labor ($100 deductible). Extended warranty programs on most consumer products are profit generators for the manufacturers and dealers.
If'n I was independently wealthy, I probably wouldn't buy it.

Dennis, you may also want to check with your insurance company. Mine offers mechanical breakdown coverage for seven years/unlimited milage. I think it is $30 per year with a $250 deductable.

I have bumper-to-bumper 100K warranty on my new 4X4. I paid $1,200 for it at the dealer. I got it on my '96 4X2 and it really paid off. I've had both trucks in the shop with the extensive mods and never ran into problems. Dealer in TX and MD honored full warranty.

Extended warranty paperwork pretty much forbids any mods or it voids warranty. Potential problem.

I'm at 34,500 and must make the extended warranty decision soon.

5 year (3 more from now) and 100,000 mi (additional 64,000 from factory warranty) will cost around $1200.

The engine is covered for the 100,000. I would be buying the coverage for the major components (trans, diffs, pumps, AC, etc. ) but not the bumper to bumper like the factory warranty.

I am real pleased with this truck and plan to keep it a long time.

Is this coverage a good expenditure?

So based on what you are saying I don't have to decide about an extended warrenty until my factory 36/36 is about up? Don't you get a pretty good idea by then if you are having problems or will have problems with the truck? If this is the case why would anyone buy the extended at the time of purchase?

Two reasons I can think of:

1. You have maximum leverage at this time to get the best deal possible on the warranty.

2. If you are financing, the . 9% is a great rate, you can roll the warranty cost into the financed amount.

I've only bought one extended warranty for a Corvette (bought used). It really helped. Would I buy again? No. I know people have used these and are glad they did but, the way I figure, it is a waste of money. If I have to contine to take the vehicle in for repairs, I'll sell it and get a good vehicle.
