Hi all, i have 01' 2500 4x4 QC with the Automatic. I have 13k now and the truck is 5 months old. I dont tow or haul anything. and i would say 85% of my driving is highway. Is the extended warranty DC is offering me worth the investment of $1,400 to warranty the rest of the truck for 100,000 miles?. I have had no problems yet (Knock on wood). Just dont know if i should spend the $1,400 on the warranty, or Transmission upgrades (TQ and VB). Anybody NEEDED the warranty after 36k?

EMD - This is my opinion: To DC, warranties are a gamble, to you it is insurance. But, DC has done the math over hundreds of thousands of vehicles and know about how much money they spend in warranty costs per vehicle.

On average, they'll make more money from warranty payers than they'll spend in warranty costs. Well, maybe that's not 100% accurrate. This is hard for me to explain.

In essence, they're gambling that you will either not have any warranty problems, or that whatever warranty repairs you do need will cost them less than $1,400. It's just another way for DC to make money. You do what your heart says is right. But, IMHO, you'd be better off putting that $1,400 in a savings account (or maybe some other form of cash savings) and just wait and see if you need it within 100,000 miles.

My guess is that if you need it, you won't need it all. And, who knows, you could crash/total the truck, or sell the truck. Do you get the money back (prorated) if you sell or crash before 100,000 miles? I don't really know, but I doubt it.

Maybe others have some opinions they'd like to state. I hope I helped, and I hope I wasn't too confusing.

Ram Ahead!

With the quality of work and the arguing you have to go though on warranty issues at most DC shops I wish there was the option of no warranty at all let alone an extended one. I'd much rather bank the money and use it if needed to do the work myself or take it to a decent mechanic.

IMO it is piece of mind you are paying for. It it your money spend it how you feel comfortable.

I will say that the last two vehicles that my parents have purchased new, the extended warranties they bought more than paid for themselves in the money they saved from not having to pay for repairs.

This is a difficult decision to make, as I said I think you are paying for piece of mind with the purchase of an extended warranty. Odds are that it won't pay for itself (the warranty) in the time you own it, but if you will rest easier because you have the waranty, buy it.

JYRO, DON'T FORGET YOUR OTHER CARS ARE TOYOTA SO AN EXTENDED WARRANTY IS RARELY USED.

REMEMBER $1400. TO DC IS A LOT MORE PARTS TO THEM THAN IT IS TO US, THEIR LABOR IS BASICLY FREE, SO $1400. GETS THEM FARTHER. TO US $1400 DOESN'T GET YOU VERY FAR.

IMO, IT WOULD ONLY TAKE ONE THING TO HAVE IT PAY FOR ITSELF.

My radiater developed a pinhole size leak. The nice young (goodlooking)service manager replaced it with no Questions. The leak was so small it did NOT show on some days,1 pint per week.
I don't think she even looked under the hood.
DC price $650 + labor. Autozone $550 + sweat.
If I would of had to repair it,thats just it REPAIR IT,torch and solder.
If you are not rough on your new truck it may pay to save the money. Any teenagers'get the Warranty.

Here is a question - Do you plan to add anything that might void that warranty or are you willing to keep it stock for the 100,000?

FWIW - Out of the all the extended warranties purchased, I have only used 1 to get something fixed and the others where just money in someone elses pocket.

Forgot to mention that the Warranty is only as good as the company that backs it.

I have the warranty and glad of it. On my 98 I blew a hole in the rearend, this was in the desert close to Amarillo,TX. For the 100. 00 deductible we saved ourself a big headache. No telling what it cost to fix. That was just the rearend, not counting the auto transmission that got hot when the rearend blew. I even got a check in the mail from the prorated warranty for the time I had left after I traded in this 98 on the 01 I have now. I bought it and hope I don't have to use it,If you do need it,the price is worth it.

Wow, alot of good thoughts. As far as do iplan on keeping it stock, well, i dont plan on doing anything more the the Exhaust and induction which i already did. I want to add an exhaust brake and some transmission mods, so i guess, No, i dont want to keep it stock. It seems that with all extended warranties, including stereo equipment, if you get the warranty, you wont need it. If you dont, 1,000 miles after the warranty expires, your transmission will fall out. I have time to think about it, we will see. Thanks for all the help

Here is another analogy for you:

Buying an extended warranty is like buying life inscurance. They are betting we won't have a problem, we are betting that we will.

In both, I think we are happier that we lost the bet (and our money).

Ok, although they are not identical situations, I think there is some wisdom here when trying to decide to buy the extended warranty.

When I bought my '99, the dealer offered $300 rebate or 100k drive train warranty. Hmmm, lessee here ... . I plow snow with this truck... . what is the probability that I will need to replace a transmission or differential??? So I debated (about 1 millisecond) before deciding to go for the 5 year, 100k extended warranty. Two years and 54k miles later, still no problems. Three years and 46k yet to go.

EMDDIESEL, I don't think you have to make up your mind right now. My 36 months are almost up and I just got an offer in the mail for an extended warranty a day or so ago. I have had no trouble with mine in 50,000 so now I probably would pass.

IMO Jyro is right on! extended warrenties are usually the bigest profit margin a company can offer! yes you will always hear about the $10,000 repair thatwas done in 2 hours with no questions asked on a $50 extended warrenty, but usually not the case.

read all the threads about dealer refusing warrenty work for one reason or another, then ask yourself if your truck is going to be totaly "stock" at 100,000 miles?

If you want the peice of mind, do what you think is best, but for my money, put it into a savings account, and at the end of the 100,000 miles either use it to buy something nice, or celabrate your trucks 100K aniversary!!!

I bought the extended warranty and I am glad I did. I have used it a couple of times and saved THOUSANDS. I have gotten over $6500 in repairs for less than $300. I will get it on the next one too. I bought mine at 35,400 miles.

I got the diesel wrap warranty when I bought my truck. Paid less than $800 for it and added it to the . 9% finance package. The warranty also includes a rental car if your vehicle must be kept overnight for service. Some dealers provide a loaner for folks who purchased the vehicle with them, so that might not apply in all cases.

If you don't make a claim against the warranty you receive your money back less a $50. 00 (or $100. 00 can't remember, have to check the paperwork) processing fee. If you have claims less than the cost of the warranty you will receive the balance minus the processing fee.

I know you could take the money you spent on the warranty and earn interest. It is up to the individual and whatever makes them comfortable.

IMHO, NO!

Based upon our companies extended warrenties. . They are designed as money makers, not insurance for the customer.

Read the fine print to see what is not covered. Look at what is, and likely hood of these components going bad. As well as what it would cost to replace.

Remember, you have to have $1,400 worth of stuff go bad before it starts to pay for itself.

Additionally, most people I know who have had them, decided to do so because they're not great at managing their money. In that case, I guess its worth it.

I don't know about you, but repairs on a fairly new truck start costing more than that... You need to evaluate your driving/maintenance practices or if you got a lemon.

Its like insurance. . Waste of money till you need it.

The warranty that they are offering you is a "mark-up" warranty. That is to say that the dealer can mark it up as to what he thinks the traffic will bare. The cost on the "Diesel Wrap" warranty for the Dodge Trucks is around $800. I bought it for $850 cause I have a "cool" dealer and he showed me some professional courtesy. (I send all me RV customers to him). The F&I guy is trying to make an extra 600 bucks on you. See if you can talk him down to something back of a grand. The comfort of knowing that it is theirs for 100,000 miles for a $50 deductable is cheap enough for me. What is the cost of peace of mind for you??? My truck is 1 year old this month and is almost out of the basic warranty. With the extended, it's theirs until I get my new 4 door.

I too, had the choice between 5 yr. 100K drive train warranty and $300 rebate and toolbox. Took me all of a second to jump on that deal. I'm getting ready to have my tailshaft housing and pinion seals replaced as well as the drive shaft yoke. I'm out $100 but I probably will save twice that once labor and parts are figured in. Go with the warranty if it's a deal like I got. Other than sweetheart deals like this one, I don't touch extended warranties. They don't kick in until the factory warranty is up, so for the first 3/36, you are paying for something you are not using. Better to look into an extended warranty after the factory warranty expires.
