The "basic warranty" is part of the vehicle and isn't refundable. :{ The extended "service contract" starts at 36,000 miles or whenever and is not part of the loan, but is insurance and a prorated portion of the cost is refundable if you request it in writing. Be sure to get your letter notarized and hand deliver it to the business manager that handled all your paperwork originally. Good luck! :)

When I opt out of the "service contract" I got back over $1500. The check was made out to DC finance and me. The service contract starts on day one because it contains aditional coverage not in the basic warranty. I canceled mine within a month of buying the truck and they still charged me for that coverage + a $50 fee to cancel.

I used the check to make 3 payments on the truck. I did not use it to pay down the principal because I have the 0. 9% financing.

Things to think about is how much mileage will you put on it in a year...

Ex: I drove over 36,000 in my 1st year!

The next thing to realize is that the warranty cost is tacked onto your loan amount(in almost all cases) So over the life of the loan it costs not only the original price, but all of the interest on that amount... .

$2000 repair seems horrible, but I'd bet money that you paid more for the warranty in the end than that!

Food for thought... . anything on a loan costs a lot more that right out of your pocket.....

I have an 01 Dodge, and added the extended warranty mainly for the rest of the truck, since the powerplant is warranteed to 100K miles. Dave Smith motors got me the extended for 1200 or 1500 bucks. I've pretty much paid for it in useage already.

steering box went out of alignment @ 42K and would have cost over 600 bucks!

Electric heated mirror, 200 bucks.

I figure by 100k miles It'll have paid for itself. The dealer I work with has not even blinked @ the bombing. Course my truck is only lightly bombed.

just 2 cents...

extended warranty

Mdonat,

I'm not sure what you are saying. Did you pay $1200. or $1500 for the warranty? How much did you have to pay for the deductible for each visit?

Go with a DC warrenty.

I did not, The after market company I had to deal with would send a inspecter from spokane everytime I took the rig in for warrenty work.

When my front end wore out and the ball joints were flappin in the breaze and the tie rod ends were smoked as well as the u-joints,track bar and a fuel guage that did not work... . they told me it was preexisting damage and would not pay a penny. However the dealership that I got the truck from (DAVE SMITH) paid the bill total $2800. 00.

Then my transmission quit working. After waiting 6 days for the inspector to show up. He said well the truck needs a new trans, but since it has 113,000 miles on it we are going to try and locate a used trans from a junkyard for me or I could have a $1400. credit for a new one. The dealer told me that if it was a DC contract he could put a new one in at no charge. So I took the credit and put it towards a real trans.

What a joke

I'm pretty sure it was 1200... (its been a while since I got it)

Dave Smith has one of the best prices in the industry (so I'm told) for DC warrantees. Any way my deductable is 50 bucks.

extended warrenty

DC and all manufacturers as well as secondary marketers all offer extended warrenty's for only one reason, PROFIT!!!!!!! if they lost money, (lost money to them is not earning the 12 - 14 % they would normally earn on their money they would not offer an extended warrenty, or the price would be considerably higher! I worked for 32 years for a major telecommunications outfit, we sold service contracts, (same as extended warrenty), and they were almost 100% profit!

They are betting that the vehicle will not require any work under the extended warrenty and you are betting that the vehicle will break and require work under the warrenty! anything wrong with that picture??? yes you will get people who have saved $1,000's by getting the warrenty, and you also can read about the people who win big at vegas, but for the most part you would be much better off by taking the money you would have spent on the extended warrenty and buying a 3/5 year cd earning 6 - 8 %, not counting normal maintenance and things that would go wrrong under "standard warrenty, (our trucks have a 5 year 100,000 mile drive train limited warrenty) you will come out way ahead of the game! if a major problem came up where you find yourself faced with a huge repair bill, cash the cd pay the penalty and you still should be ahead!

just my 2 cents.
