I know it's probably been covered before, but I couldn't't find much info. My question is, Do you guys think it would be advantageous to buy the extended warranty for my 04 Ram CTD ? The truck just came into the dealer and I will pick it up in a day or two but wanted to get your opinion first. I've never been an extended warranty kind of guy however I've read about problems with the fuel delivery system and weak front ends, however I don't know if the 1500+/- he is going to charge me is worth it. Whats your opinion?

Thanks

Its always paid off for me.

One transmission, TQ, rear end will probably be needed before 100K. My 98 needed front end parts just over 50K. That 36K bumper to bumper comes up fast for most people. I don't understand what the 70K deal is about, dealer says it covers the internal parts in the drive train. I feel better having the added coverage with all the electronics on these trucks. My last Dodge made up the price at 48K with transmission leaks and A/C problems which the dealer claimed the standard warranty does not cover.

The finance guy at the dealership I was talking to made a point to mention electronics problems with these trucks, I figured he was looking to sell me on the warranty. I've got a day or two to decide so any other input from other members would be appreciated. Thanks SSage.

I got the 7 year 100K $100 ded for $1995 as part of the deal on the truck. If I never use it, it will be money well spent.

Chrysler warranty do not get a dealer warranty or an aftermarket one.

The factory one I used a fair amount on my 92 as it had a electric issue the 96 it was just nice to get a rental car the service guy and I alwyas wrote something up that was covered by warranty for all service work and got a rental car for the day that way.

With the 03 I don't know how much I will use the warranty as it has been back to dealer only twice since new and I have about 34k on it now.

I bought the zero deduct 5 year 100k for around 1700. These programs can be sold at any Chrysler dealer up until the 3/36 is up, at least i was told that last year. SO maybe sit on it and find out if you have problems or shop the price a little. Tomeygun maybe?

I just got off the phone with my Geico agent and they offer an extended warranty program for new vehicles. According to this guy, the warranty consists of:

7yrs/100k miles bumper to bumper

Must sign up for warranty program within 15k miles of 15 months since new

Deductible 250. 00

Price 32. 00/6mos

Not at all bad considering the price of the Dodge extended warranty. Worth considering it seems. It also appears on must read the fine print. Rep believes customer pays dealership and gets reimbursed from Geico.

Anyone with any experience with this Geico program?

I had an extended warranty from Warranty Gold. The underwriter they used when bankrupt and I was left with useless paper. I feel that the warranties from the vehicle manufacturer are less likely to fail. If someone is offering a warranty at a price too low to be real, chances are good that they can't survive. Buyer beware.

To each his own, but my two cents and my son that woked at a dealership for quite a few years is... extended warranty=more dealer profit=ripoff. IMHO

I usually don't buy these, but I was offered, through the dealer, the DC 3 additional yeas or 100K miles for $2000. If I don't use it, after the six year period I get all the money back. So, I'm letting them hold my 2 grand for six years and get no interest, but should I need a major repair I will be covered. In retospect I dont know if this was a good deal or not, but it was inticing at the time.

I would it say it depends on how many miles and how long your keeping the truck. I keep mine about 10 years or more. I've always come out ahead, even on my 98 Caddy SLS. It needed all new struts at 23K and 4 years old, very expensive. It was covered thankfully. I think they were $500 or $600 (dealer only parts) each, plus labor and some rubber bushings. I paid 1K extra, it would have cost at least $1500.

Things have tended to start having trouble between the 5th and 6th year, or for me 50 to 60 thousand miles. Then its smooth running. The dually is used for hauling and pulling most of the time, so more miles will be under load than not. All my Dodges have had Autos and they all leaked and shifted like crap. One front seal cost around $540 on my 98 Ram, it was losing enough trans fluid to wet the bottom of the truck to the point of it dripping from the frame drive shaft etc. The added coverage is really nice when you need transmission work! The dealer charges just under $400 for those weak track bars, I went Moog instead. Power windows have been an issue over the years too. The 03 has a problem right now, The window rattles and bangs the glass when raising. I don't like messing with that stuff.

Our truck has had more problems than the average truck, its been back to the dealer more times than I can remember. Its nice to know, if the A/C fails 5 years from now, for the 5th time, the dealer will fix it at no added cost to me. I've already had the compressor changed. Now the 98 was just about problem free, only went to the dealer for one recall and two service visits, track bar and transmission. The water pump just went out probably because it sits too much. I wish I had gotten more than the 5 year plan. So far, its paid off in our case. Usually I don't have the $$$'s for a new trans, or new computer, or new trans, they tend to fail at the worst times. :{

Just discussed this yesterday with a local dealer for my 4. 5 with 5700 miles on it. The cost was $1670 for $100 ded for 6/100k coverage from DC. The 5/70k was $1210. The price stays the same until 12K miles then jumps by about $300.

I agree with the gent that indicated the DC warranty is the way to go. Too many issues with these trucks in the past not to go with the warranty, IMHO. Don't forget to negotiate on the price, it is not fixed.
