Thinking of getting an extended warranty. . I currently have 33,500k on it now. Dealer says it will cost $1369. 00 to take the entire truck to 5 yrs/100k miles with a $100. 00/occurrance deductible. That's 5 years from the day I sign up or 100k miles total, whichever comes first. I need to sign up for it before it gets to 35k miles. The main reason for my condern is the 6-speed transmission. It shifts just fine now but will it last? I'd hate to have a major repair bill on it after the standard warranty expires. So far the the truck has been nearly flawless mechanically. No steering wander, no brake pull. Been in once for a 4wd light that wouldn't go out.

I may decide to sell it before current warranty expires, so I need to figure out which way to go.

So... would you guys like to help me out in this decision? Thanks.

Take a look at this company. They've been in business for years, and you don't have to use a Dodge dealer for repairs. They are also very competitive with the dealer warranty prices and usually cheaper...

Have Fun... ;)

I can understand and appriciate your concern because I have been in your shoes many times in the past, debating about aftermarket warranties and I can tell you one piece of advice. DO IT! For the price of the warranty, one semi serious warranty issue and you have no concern. If you do decide to cancel if you sell your truck, many companies will prorate your policy and refund the difference. I have purchased dozens of vehicles and there is no better piece of mind than knowing you are protected. I would strongly consider Mopar for your first line of defence! They usually send you a letter in the mail about the time yours is due to expire( 3 year ) Hope this helps!!! Jace:D

I bought the extended warranty as well, and am several thousand dollars ahead. I had steering and front end problems on mine that drug out well past the original warranty period, and an automatic transmission that made me nervous to begin with. I am a bit over 80K on the odometer and the transmission is going, but I am covered so I am not worried about the cost. The new transmission will cost me $56, deductible and tax. Would I do it again? No. If I ever have a vehicle that has as many problems again I will get rid of it rather than deal with the frustration of working through the problems. If your truck has no major problems, and appears that all will be well for some time I would not buy the warranty, and put the $1500 in a CD or something. MHO.

If you are going to buy the warranty then go with the DC warranty. Third party may be cheaper initially but can be trouble when you go to make a claim.

The markup on the warranties is unbeliveable. I would give the the folks at Mark Roberts Dodge a call, they usually have a lower price and should be willing to negotiate a little.

One of the reasons I suggested a third party warranty is for those of us that have done some degree of BOMBing. With the DC warranty, all it takes is for one of them to decided you have modified your vehicle engine/trans/exhaust, or whatever, and they will enter it into the DC computer and possible deny coverage. With a third party warranty this is less likely. An extended DC warranty isn't worth much if you have to continually worry about it being voided...

time limit?

"That's 5 years from the day I sign up or 100k miles total, whichever comes first. "

I think on my DC extended warranty, its 5 years from the in-service date/ day the vehicle was initially purchased, not the date you get the agreement. Did something change?

I purchased the DC extended for my '98 Ram and used it when my fuel pump went out at 49k miles. However, I wish I had known about Warranty Gold when I purchased this. We purchased a used '99 Plymouth Breeze in 2000 and got the Warranty Gold extended which we used for one major repair when it had about 60k on it. I believe that the years did start from the time we bought it.

They used to sell through dealers, but switched to strictly internet selling and reduced their cost considerably. They are the lowest cost I found and was easy to use.

However, one little qwirk I did not know about. When our Breeze was totaled last year, they refunded by prorating using the months and miles remaining, which I knew. What I did not realize was that they prorate to the year the car went into service new, not when I purchased the car. But I still got close to 1/2 back and used it prior to that.

I spun the OD bearing in the case. One lousy overdrive bearing $49 and case $265. The Stealers took me to the cleaners with the diagnostic time even though I told them to check the OD bearing as "noise was only in 4th gear OD". YES, RIGHT OUT OF THE SERVICE MANUAL !!! Even an idiot like me can diagnose a noise.

One week and almost $1800. 00 I got my truck back. No help from DC Command either. Payback is fun, to date, I talked 3 people out of buying new DC, all went to the other big 2. I will continue my mission.

I knew it was "BOHICA" from the get go. The warranty is expensive because they know you will be using it.

Warranty

Go with Warranty Gold. When you talk to them don't bite on the first quote. After talking to them a couple of times, I paid $1000. 00 for thier best warranty pkg. to take my wife's 2001 Intrepid to 6 years 100k miles with no deductable. They also took a $100. 00 first payment and $100 a month with no interest. A real good deal compaired to the dealer.

I had Warranty Gold on my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee. They paid for a new rear axle at over $1000 no questions asked. I had a 6 year 100K zero deductable warranty.

I got the DC warranty, starts from the in service date. Not a problem based on the number of miles I drive per year the warranty will run out of time at the same time I will be at 100K miles. I bought this warranty because I got the automatic transmission and also it was a used truck with 35K miles on it when I got it. Only warranty repair had been to replace the track bar. BUT even though it looked well cared for and drove well, you never know how someone else treated it before you bought it. I thought it was good insurance based on the cost of repairs on these trucks. I would get the warranty. Also I will not modify anything on my truck until it is out of warranty and I will follow the recommended maintance by the book. Don't want to give them a shot at denying a claim.

FF1063, are you saying you had an extended warranty and they refused to cover the repair, or are you saying you wish you did have it?

B'Gate,

Sorry for the rambling story. Yes, I wish I had the warranty. If this repair was under DC's warranty, no way would the Stealer get to bilk DC Command out of that kind of money. But, as a 5 star customer, we just pay and pay. I would only consider the DC warranty if you plan on having work performed at a DC Stealer.

Warrant Extension

Good reply's on this subject-thanks. DC told me the warranty started 5 years from when I purchase the warranty. Seems they are baiting me if it really runs 5 yrs. from in-service date. They were very specific. I am going to contact Warrant Gold, besides, I've got me this "bomb" itch I want to scratch. :D

Warranty Gold and 1Source Auto Warranty are both (and the only) full 5 star rated in customer satisfaction. Has anyone used 1 Source?
