Does anyone have the wiring diagrahm for wiring up an external voltage regulator? I think that my PCM that controls the charging voltage from the alternator has gone out. If anyone has any info on this it would be great to find out how it was wired. I have a 96 2500 TD. Any help on this matter will be greatly appericated!

It can be done

Sorry, dont have any diagrams, but I had a shop in Poplar Bluff MO do it to a 93 I had last fall. Cost about $70 for 2hrs labor, regulator, and shop supplies. WOrked fine; Check Engine light stayed on, though. I fixed that when I installed guages- pulled the bulb. FInd an auto electrical shop, and they should be able to tell you which wire does what, and let you go from there. If I think of it, I'll stop by next time I'm in town and ask them.

voltage reg

Here is what I used except I added a relay to send the voltage signal from the ignition to the FLD+ . Hope this helps. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. The reg is a 70's style Mopar and is under 20 bucks. It works great.

Thanks Malcolm, I think that helps a lot. .

Battery wire

My 92 had an aftermarket regulator screwed to the firewall when I got it, but it still didn't charge. The original wire to the battery was the problem. When I jumpered the Battery wire (the big fat one) directly to the battery, all worked fine. Watch the wire size if you need to do this though. My test wire was # 10 and it got really hot after a few minutes. As I believe in overkill, :-laf I got a cheap set of jumper cables, hacked them, and used the #6 gage wire to route my charging circuit to the battery. Works cool as a cucumber now.

For safety sake, I have a generic fusible link between my #6 and the battery post.

Internal Regulator

When I installed my '97 5. 9L Cummins in a '93 Chevy 1T 4X4, I took the OEM 140 amp alternator to my local rebuilder in Fayetteville, NC and he installed a "SPIDER" internal regulator in the NIPPON DENSO alternator. Ran it on the test bench, and each time, everytime, it put out 144 AMPs.

The spider is a 1. 75" thin chipset with wires to fields and connecters. While he was in there, I had him add a "W" terminal for my Chevy tachometer. It too is very accurate. I am pleased.

Been running it for a year and it works perfect. Cost $83. 00

Two wires, main charge and field from switch. One wire for tachometer.

He would not give me the Part Number, but I am sure other builders can get the part.
