How many guys out there have had to add extra breathers to their engine. I appear to have high blowby when running high rpms-(3500) and need to add more capacity to vent the crankcase pressure. I just did a compression check and it was good. I have a spare set of valve covers and am considering welding nipples of aluminum pipe to them and putting on some universal breathers found at the local parts store. Has anyone done this before? If so what did you do/ what parts did you use to fix the problem? Did they get soaked with oil? How well did they work?

Here's another option to help vent the crankcase. You can use a 24 valve breather and vent tube in place of your oil fill tube, example here, only with a hard metal line instead of Dodge 24V's rubber vent hose. Doing so you would have to get a valve cover with oil fill cap or swap your oil fill tube back on during an oil change to add oil. Or do like I did and get yourself a 24V breather/crank case vent and fill tube 2 in 1 combo shown here. The 2 in one cost me about $47 from Cummins. You screw your old fill tube onto the new vent. If you'd like part number let me know.

The part number would be appreciated. It would save me the reaming from the dealer. I looked into adding the 24 valve breather a while back but if I remember right they wanted 200 or more for the parts.

Thanks,

Jordan

2 in 1 breather (pictured in top pic) is Cummins part number 3944797. Most likely not available from Dodge, only Cummins. You'll need to use your oil fill tube. Then for the vent tube, use Cummins part number 3937372. That is the rubber hose vent used on Dodge 24V applications, not the metal tube setup pictured.

You wouldn't have an engine number for the 2 in 1 breather would you? The local cummins dealer is hesitant bout ordering it. It comes up in the computer as some sort of bracket. He says that if i can get the engine number then it will give me a picture of the breather and then it will be sure to be what i want.

Check to make sure you don't have a loose vacuum line anywhere. I had a recent high blow-by issue out my crank breather tube after I installed my new cylinder head and I accidentally knocked the main vacuum supply line off the T up on the top of the firewall when putting the head back on. Put the line back on and wa-la! no more high blow-by. Found this out after reading a few searched posts and our vacuum pump apparently vents into the crankcase. Just a thought before spending money on that 24v breather. :)

1999 24V school bus engine serial number - 45775737. Good read on this breather and diagram of it: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=151433&highlight=breather. Trust me, I'm reading you the part number off the box the 2 in 1 came in. You don't need the bracket, I ordered it and I have something in the way on my timing cover, the little tab that a throttle return spring attaches too. I'm not sure if you're newer 12V has this. Either way doesn't matter, don't need the bracket.

Oh and I see why the Cummins dealer was hesistant about it. The part description on the box is BRT, CRC. Stands for breather, crankcase. Need to slap him next time you go in there.
