When you guys that are adding extra fuel filters to your trucks under neath the bed is there a problem with fuel supply with the factory in tank lift pump? Im curious as I would think that pushing fuel thru 2 or 3 filters would be a little hard on the factory in tank Pump. If you are adding a different pump what type is it? I have a 2008 2500 4x4 6. 7 and before I get to many miles on it I would like to increase the longevity of my injectors. Thanks

More filters have got to place more strain on the pump. I don't know if those who use additional filtration have noticed shortened pump life or would admit it.

I would like to hear some responses to this question. I have been thinking very seriously about adding a 10 micron W/F seperator and a 3 micron fuel filter up under my bed. Any body have a pressure gauge with extra filters that can tell us how the stock in tank pump seems to handle the extra restriction? Maybe a before and after comparison of the fuel pressures?

before my air dog, i had the factory filter and the GDP filter on the intake horn. I put a gauge right before the cp3. at idle i got about 10 psi.

Of cource around 115k my pressures were low even with new filter so i did the air dog with filters.
I still push through the filters stated above.
i easily get 15 at the cp3, but my gauge it on its way out.
(i also put a gauge on the top of the factory filter position to see the pressure prior to the two filter in the engine bay.

Harvey,

Why are you so against anything that people do to their trucks, ie "black boxes", extra fuel filtration etc.

I have seen ~1psi loss through my GDP 2 micron system under throttle using the factory pump. I expected it to be more, especially with stock size lines.

I don't think Harvey is against it. Just bringing up a good point about the stock pump and its ability to deal with extra restriction for the long term. That is one of the points I have thought about as well. It seems that Mopar is offering a 2 micron filter kit and it does not include a new lift pump. So I am assuming that the intank is strong enough to push through the extra filtration. For how long, I don't know but it seems to be capable.

With pump durability in mind, How long have you guys run the extra filters with the stock pump?

I am using the GDP Big line kit which uses a 2um filter after the factory installed filter but a head of the CP3 pump. I have had this set-up on my truck for 25,000 miles with no performance issues as of yet.

I do not know of anyone you has measure the delta P through the hoses, fittings, filter base and filter to see what the pressure drop is to be able to determine if this kit would be a determent or not.

I do not have a fuel pressure gage installed to check pressure drop so I cannot be sure what the overall effect is. To me cleaner fuel is safer than the small delta P that is occurring in my fuel system with the use of the Big Line Kit. I believe there are other on this site who have similar set-ups and who do have the pressure gage installed and could provide their fuel pressure readings if they so desired to do so.

I have a dual filter setup underneath on the frame rail with the f/w sep and a 2um filter going thru a 3/8 fuel line all the way to the cp3. I eliminated the stock fuel filter. I ordered everything from GDP. I haven't noticed any issues. I plan on adding a gauge to monitor filter flow soon.

I have 3 fuel filters on my stock in-tank pump. I added them about 57K miles and 1600 hours ago. The push still pushes the same pressure it did before.

The pump is capable of much more pressure than we get, and has an external bypass that is in the tank. So I really doubt any of the added resistance got sent to the pump, as it works at the same rate all the time.

In addition a clean filter should have a very low pressure drop across the media, and when you have a staged filtering system 20-5-2 vs a single 7 or 5 you get filters that last longer, and have better flow.

When I started to have problems with the Fords that I owned I installed a 10 micron and following that a 2 micron filter. This solved all the problems on the Fords so as I purchased each of the Dodges that I owned, 01, 03, 04. 5, 05, 08 I installed the same on each of them... we'd change the factory filter every 18 months and the larger filters under the truck every 50K miles... All the trucks are gone except for the 05 I kept for my own, but the 01 , 03 were sold at 500K miles, and so on...

I think and believe that extra protection is important...

I am moving forward with my filter installation. I ordered hose, fittings, filters, and filter heads. Last of it is showing up today.

I also have a low fuel pressure warning light commonly used in circle track cars, turns on at 4 psi and down. I will install that after the filters to warn me if they get clogged.

The low psi light won't really tell you much, you can pull down to 4 psi on clean filters on an 09. I would return it and get a pressure gauge.

Good to know. I will trade it out for a gauge in the near future. For now I will install the filters and start getting the benefits of clean fuel at least. And peace of mind!
