:confused:Started my 97 up this AM to move it to get my Jeep pickup out to work on it. Let it idle for a few minutes and went to move it out front. I noticed a bit of a knocking sound but I figured it was something else and it went away for about a minute. Then I had it in its parking spot with it idling and that knocking sound came back and a bit of hissing out the exhaust. I shut it down and scratched my head. I checked the oil and it was at the add level but nothing too low (I was going to do a change today also after the last trip). I topped off the oil to make myself feel better and tried it again. It fired up and ran smooth then started a bit of the clack, hissing, and a bit of stumbling. I am wondering if I have a sticking valve or something worse. Could the KDP be the culprit. I had something similar happen several years ago when I got to the top of a grade. I got a good knocking/exhaust leak sound and I just kept running it toward home and it went away and it never did it again in 100K until something similar today. Anyway I was wondering if this sounds like anything in particular to anyone? I will also take suggestions on the next step if you have any. I am thinking about popping the valve covers and watching the valves, don't know if I'd see what I'm looking for though. The truck is a 97 CA rig with 276,000 on the clicker. Stock except for 4" exhaust. Thanks.

update

Well, I convinced myself that with it being intermmitent it wasn't a big deal to start it up again. I fired it and it didn't knock anymore but it miss and stuble and smoke a bit then cleared up. I figured maybe it needed a good run. Ran it and it smokkkkkkkked then cleared up and ran as it always had. Drove a way the took the dog down a trail and it fired up and drove smooth. I figured I'd take a good grade and work it a bit for good measure. I ran it hard up the grade and it started to die out and loose rpm and smokkkkkkkkkkkkkkke big time and barley made the grade till it cleared up and got some of its power back. By then I babied it back to the house and it was running a bit rough and had major blowby out the breathe rand the dipstick!! What did I just do??? I thought it passed as a non issue then it went to crap! I'm tempted to take it to a professional for the first time to see how bad it is.

Can you fill us in on what truck we are talking about. Model ,year, engine etc. Have you had any recent work done . major blow by out the breather sounds like a problem.

I should figure out how to do a sig on here. Nothing recent just been driving it forever because it keeps going with the usual routine maintenance of course.

Hissing and smoke. Your intake hose needs to be refastened. Sometimes these leaks are hard to spot.

If you drive it hard with out proper air flow you could melt the top of the piston. $$$$$

I'm afraid it's worse than that. I think I lost a piston. Lots of blowby out dipstick and from below. I am getting my other rigs dialed in before I bring that one into the carport for a month so I won;t know for at least another week. I'll keep you all posted on what I find. I'm sure I'll be asking a bunch of questions as I've never tore into a diesel motor before. No better way to learn than getting in there. Although I would have prefered not to!!

Well I solved the problem. I sold the truck. Bad timing on the truck going south on me and I just didn't have the time to fix it and try to run a business. Just spoke with the new owner he said it sucked the EGR valve and scored up the #2 and roughened up the #1 a bit. One more reason to hate CA and emissions bull**** (as if replacing it for $300 a few years ago wasn't bad enogh). He's getting it rebuilt and is excited about the truck he will end up with. SO, I am in the market for a 06 or early 07 currently around northern CA if anyone has any leads. 4 door, LB, 4x.....
