I just bought a new 07 5. 9L and after 1200 miles checked the oil and added about a quart(thought maybe it was a little low from the factory). Since then I am at 3800 miles and have added almost a gallon total. I dont see any leaks under the truck, and my exhaust appears clean. Is this normal for the breakin period of the CR engine? My last truck was a 12v and didn't use hardly any oil between oil changes.

I don't see how that is close to being normal. If it were me, it would be at the dealer ASAP.

I agree. I put 15000 miles on my 06, when I changed the oil at 7500 it was full. I will be changing it this weekend, its still full.

Holy hades! Take it back to the dealer.

Dip your tank

Dip your fuel tank with a clear hose and see if the fuel is black. I had a small CAT in my last truck and it had a bad injector and it was pumping my oil in to my fuel tank. I don't know if the Cummins works the same way or not.

Good Luck

My goodness, I run 12,000-15,000 miles between oil changes and never add any make-up oil. I probably could add a quart close to the change, but I never do. My method has worked for 270,000 miles with good reports from Blackstone.

Have the dealer start a consumption check. They should change the oil and mark the drain plug and filter so they know it was not removed. Drive it at least a 1000 miles (2000 would be better) and return for them to check it. Don't even look at the oil level until goes back to the dealer. Cummins also recommends that it sit at least 20 minutes before checking after running engine. If it is using that much it is one in a million.

I have to agree with everyone else that something is wrong.

I have over 86,000 miles on mine and have never added oil between changes.

Cummins also recommends that it sit at least 20 minutes before checking after running engine.

I've never subscribed to that theory. If it takes that long for oil to drain back, you'd dry sump the thing off the lot. I pretty much shut mine down and pull the dipstick.

If I pull my dipstick right after shut down it will read about half a quart+ low, if I wait 5 min or more it reads full.

The Cummins takes 13 quarts when new, and 12 (including filter) at every change. While running, the level will appear to be another quart low.

If they decided that the dipstick mark should be checked after waiting a few minutes, not waiting means you will run about one quart overfilled. Running overfilled may cause excessive consumption, because the rods hit and splash around the oil, and cause an oil mist that will flow out the vent tube faster than if you run the recommended level. It also wastes a little more fuel to splash the oil around.

Don't add oil unless it drops to the low mark, then come back and tell us how many miles it took to burn a gallon. You may find that it never drops below halfway to full, so there is no real problem.
