OK guys... Here's my dilemma... I've been running an EZ & 275s for a while now but with my gears, tires & trans (auto) it sometimes is a bit challenging when towing. I tow a #8000 5er & on winding pulls EGTs sometimes become an issue with the auto trans, tires & gears.

Would running just F1-EDM injectors be a better route in regards to EGTs or would I be better off getting the gears swapped out & be good to go. I know their has been alot of praise regarding Dons sticks but I don't want to be forced into getting a larger turbo because of the bigger sticks.

I should mention I ran the EZ with DD IIs & got rid of the II's because of EGT issues. My thought was I could sell the EZ & 275s & just upgrade to some 1. 6s but I'm not too sure if that would help my situation or not. Right now I really don't have any issues with my pulling ability unless I lose lockup behind a slow moving vehicle on a large hill or a winding hill where I can't maintain lockup.

Thanks,

Clay

Are you running a boost elbow? If so how much boost are you seeing at WOT? Too much is not good either.

I get about 30-31 lbs under heavy pedal. I don't run a HY, my 99 auto came with the HX35... . Please keep em coming!

~30 is the perfect place to be running a HX 12cm turbo. I guess the next question is: What EGT's are you seeing and are they pre or post turbo? At what RPM too!

Going down the hwy at 60 mph all is good. I'm running around 2200 rpms & boost of course varies. It's when I get in these winding, curving roads where my speed is down to 20 - 40 mph where I have the problems. Low rpm, little boost, SPIKING EGTs, & if I downshift manually to bring the RPMS & boost up my Auto Trans temps start to rise FAST out of lockup. In those situations my EGTs can spike to 1200-1250 easily pre-turbo! If I manually downshift I can get the RPMs up and along with that the boost. I can get to #30 under heavy throttle but as the trans up shifts the RPMs drop & along with that the boost.....

Clay, the EZ, 275's and HX35 is a perfect towing combo for your 99' 24v. I run the same combo on my 01' HO 6-spd, however when the motor is cold, the EZ has a little too much timing (on the HO) so I baby it until I reach normal water temp, then every thing is good. It sounds to me like maybe you are driving the Cummins to match the weakness of the transmission's high temps. How about adding some cooling capacity to the transmission, is that an option? I think the Cummins mods are fine, look at the transmission instead.

Sounds like you do not have the DTT Smart Controller so that you can have 2nd gear TC lock up. (Then you can have an exhaust brake) Have you talked to Bill about this? I have Jammer 1's, Comp in EZ mode, 4:10's, HY35 and the only EGT problems I have are at high RPM's in third, like pulling I84 between Ellengsburg and Yakima, and I am going to be looking for a HX35-12W to see if that will help. I was up at DTT yesterday working on a strange little problem, Bill and I think a stock HX is my next step. Just need to find one in the NW area of Washington, so that I can eyeball it. MY GCW is around 18,250 with the 5er. I would not trade my 4:10's BTW, as I do not drive Bobtail that much. I never have any transmission temp issues. I have a send in the output line and another in the Magtech pan. SNOKING

Tou are correct! No Smart Controller. I didn't have the Billet funds when I had my trans done. I've talked to Bill about adding the controller & he told me I could but there is like a 27% failure on the OEM input shaft when the controller is used & he just wanted me to be aware of this. His next comment I kinda took to heart... . "Do you feel lucky?"... .

Even with the 3. 5s & 295 tires the Cummins gets my setup rolling & pulls well down the road. Trans works great! It's just when I get into the winding roads where I end up at like 30-40 mph struggling between holding lockup & trying not to bury the Pyro or Trans guage... ... It's a huge friggin balancing act.

I suspect that the gear swap to 4. 10s is probably the best solution as this point. I've got about 70k miles on my DTT & I know it won't last forever so next build I will definately going FULL BILLETS!

In my case, when towing straight and level I'll see a 100* egt drop when I turn the Comp on. Under a load, the temperature difference is even greater. So to answer your original question, for cooler egts leave the EZ in place.

Klaybus I think if you either drop down to 265 tires or go with 4. 10s it would help a lot. Your high EGTs are a problem because of your RPM being too low when not shifting down manually. I noticed on my '01 if I put the fuel to it below 16-1700 RPM it would get pretty warm, because there's not enough air.
