First of all I'd like to thank HVAC for taking a few hours out of a beautiful Saturday morning to hook me up with an EZ and 275 injectors. After almost being arrested for working on my truck in a public park, we parted ways and I headed back to Sacramento. What a HUGE difference in performance. I've driven my truck around for a couple of weeks now and have fallen in love with my beast all over. This weekend, I hooked her up to the 5th wheel and we headed to the coast for a couple of days. About 100 miles into the trip, I found that almost on demand, I can give her some juice and get a shudder from my auto trans. I babied her all the way there and back, backing off on the throttle everytime the shuddering started. Here are my questions. 1- Have I fried anything? 2- If not, what do I do next to cure my dilemma and avoid frying anything? As always, thanks for the support guys.

the shuddering is because the engine RPM is varying and causing the dampner springs in the lockup clutch to load and unload . try removing the EZ and see if it changes . i'll assume this was only going up a grade and not all the time , if it was all the time while trailer was in tow you may have a problem beginning . with the EZ and 275's you should be upgrading your TC and VB to better get the power to the ground and increase lockup apply .

If you dont have plans to modify the trans then you might want to try switching fluid to synthetic, there is a modifier added which is supposed to eliminate the tc shudder. Ihave the same mods as you but never experienced the shudder a lot of people talk about, but then i installed a DTT vb& tc which i definately reccomend, especially as you tow, you,ll really love the truck then!
Talk to Bill K,or call Herb at Kustom Truck in Yuba City, who is a DTT installer. His # is 530)674-1376.

Waterbrain. . I think you should use some caution here. I do not own an auto, but I do know from reading lots of posts that the auto does not do well with some simple HP upgrades, unless you upgrade the auto as well. A friend had 275s and a VA(similar to your setup) and began to see immediately that he should upgrade his transmission! I hope there is no damage done to your transmission already... call an expert.

Well, after doing significant research over the past few days and spending countless hours rummaging through the TDR Archives, I placed an order today with DTT for their Torque Converter (618-91) and their Valve Body (012480) - heck... it's only money, right? Should ship later this week and I should be able to make plans for getting it in my truck in a couple of weeks. Any suggestions for installations? Is this a do-it-yourselfer-driveway-job or am I better off footing the bill for a shop install? If the shop is the way to go, any recommendations? I'm in Sacramento... DTT recommended Kustom Truck in Yuba. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Bill and his crew did my install 4/20 and I
love it!!!

This is by no means a simple install.

If you've pulled a transmission before, you should be able to do this. Having said that, if you do it yourself, it would be a good idea to crawl underneath ahead of time and make sure you have all the tools you're going to need and about 17-18 quarts of ATF and most of a whole day. This is a good time to put on a Mag Hy-tech transmission pan, tail shaft seal, etc. This is how I did it:

I did this job alone, so I needed a way to manipulate the transmission safely without the need for another set of hands. So I unbolted all linkages/bell housing/drive shafts/transmission cooling lines from the transmission, took out 3 of the 4 x-member bolts from each side (leaving the top rear-most bolts in on each side) and took the jack from under the seat, cut a 2x4 to length to just fit the jack and 2x4 between the frame rails and spread them just enough to rotate the x-member backwards about 2 inches. With the transmission supported in the front with my floor jack and in the rear by the x-member, I slid the transmission/transfer case rearward about 6 inches which allowed just enough room to slide the old TC out and the new TC in. Be forewarned that the TC you take out is about 70 pounds or so and WILL LEAK fluid down your arms as you remove it. (If you do it this way make sure it is cool!) Be sure to start all six bolts through the flywheel into the TC before snugging them down as there is some play and the last one may not fit if the rest are already tight!
Anyways, this is how I approached it doing the job in my driveway. BTW, I put down a 10 ft by 20 ft thick plastic sheet under my truck to catch the oil and is a heck of a lot easier to slide around on your back than the concrete Enjoy, you will gain a healthy respect for the size/weight/strength of your truck's components and the end result is just magic.

waterbrain,
Second the motion on the TC/VB upgrades. . Makes the truck like it shoulda been from DC... I did my truck with less than 3K miles on it, and have enjoyed it ever since... .

Good step. The EZ and 275's are too much for the stock auto. Too easy to slip the lockup.
You could do it yourself, if so inclined. If not, find a shop that Bill has recommended, he's already asked them the right questions.
