Turbo Silencing Ring?

I never did install the boost elbow that came with my EZ because the instructions were either not clear or nonexistent (I don't even remember).

Can somebody tell me what to do with this thing? All it is is a little 90-deg fitting that looks sorta like 1/8" NPT on one end (except it has something inside it), and a hose barb on the other, plus a small hose clamp.

My turbo is the type with the rod thing running to the wastegate. It's hard to describe, but I can post a photo if needed.

Thanks!

Rob

First I am not an expert, but this is how I understand the thing works and it makes sense when I put mine on--the little brass 90 lets the extra boost made by the turbo to dump out so as not to produce more boost than is programmed--now when you put your box on; the box produces more boost and to use it you must put in the new brass 90. Why? Well like you said-there's something inside of the new 90 and this something lets the turbo boost up higher before it dumps(you get more power). There is nothing inside the original 90 so the extra boost made by the turbo due to the box dumps out at the factory setting(less power). How much extra power is what I don't know and hopefully someone else can give us that info.
To install it--all you do is remove the hose clamp on the existing 90; unscrew it; screw in the new 90 and put the new hose clamp on and you are set. Very easy. I'm not sure about your set up but on my '99 the little brass 90 was below the hose that goes from the air filter to the turbo(it's easier to install if you remove this hose first)-on the front of the turbo. Hope this helps and hopefully someone can shed some more light on this. chris

Chris:

Thanks for the description. My problem is that I don't have a rubber hose. Mine has a metal tube for the wastegate. I guess I'll have to look at it more closely tomorrow and see if I can figure it out.

At least now I know that this 90 replaces the old one. That alone is a big help. #ad

Thanks!

You've got an ETH, so you Don't have a "hardlined" wastegate. Between your turbine housing and the wastegate actuator's head (black) you'll see a rubber hose with Oetiker clamps on the ends. At the end of this hose, where it attaches to the turbo's housing (front, below the air inlet tract from the airbox, REMOVED to do this) you will see the hose is clamped to a brass fitting. You have to open up the Oetiker clamp on the stock elbow with screw driver and or pliers, CAREFUL NOT TO GROUND YOUR PASSENGER'S SIDE BATTERY IN THE PROCESS!
Once the clamp is loose, slide off the hose.
Remove the clamp, install the worm (radiator hose type) clamp, remove the OEM elbow, install the EZ 90' elbow (yep the OEM one isn't 90', but it fits) reattach hose and tighten worm clamp. With similar DD TrueTorque Box peak boost on ETH went from 22 to 31.

Hope this helps.

Ps. I see you're an F-body Enthusiast... here's a pic for ya, my rig and the '97 1LE I traded for it.

Nice!!! Too bad you traded it.

I'm looking to pick up (later this year) my friend's 98 Z28 1LE that's setup for ESP, since my own 98Z won't fit into a competitive class with the supercharger.

Rob

Rob-

You have an ETH in Cali?

I thought it was a 49 state certification?

That's great!

Glad to see someone having fun on the west coast despite all the Air-a-noia. Good Luck w/ the '98. I campaigned my three seasons in FS, my wife really misses it. I enjoyed it, but crave AStock in one of those Mo30 968's =)... try finding one of those hen's teeth.

Yup, there are ETHs out here. Quite a few from what I've read. I know one other guy with a regular 2001 (not . 5) ETH who has a bunch of mods and stuff.

I spent the last three years in BSP ('86 Corvette), but am taking the year off to finish building the car, and hope to run this whole year in my friend's 1LE in ESP. He has a new Z06 Corvette we were GOING to run in SS, but he changed his mind. Hmph.

Vaughn:

I will. Actually, that photo is very dated. I've since installed a Psychotty and new guages with a different thermocouple, so I suppose I should update the pix. #ad

I installed the boost elbow yesterday. I towed my car trailer down to Dublin to pick up a friend's car, and on the way down and back up, the most boost I saw (using the Peak Hold button on the SPA Boost/EGT guage) was 25 psi. This is up from 22 before. Now, when sitting still at a traffic light, I'd see -2 psi from time to time, probably due to the barometic pressure change with the rain storms out here, but even still, that'd mean an equivelent of 27 psi peak.

Where's the other 4 psi? #ad

Rob

My ETH hits 30 psi in a split second with or without the EZ. Don't know what it was with the stock injectors.

Okay, it's official. I haven't seen anything over 26 psi (and barely that) since installing the elbow. Wonder what the deal is with that...

Rob

That's when I saw my 26 also... in 6th going up the Sunol grade tonight on the way to Santa Clara.

At least my max EGT was 1168.

Rob G,

Turn that allen head screw in on the boost elbow. It will raise your boost. But do it in increments so that you don't over-do it. Boost will also be a function of fueling. So if you turn the screw all the way in and reach a ceiling boost, it's because you don't have enough fuel to go any higher. let us know if this works.

Amianthus, not sure if RobG has the adjustable elbow. I have a Edge PE and a EZ, both came with non-adjustable boost elbows.

Scott W.

only takes a drill to adjust the non adjustable elbow, dial it right in,
btw robG where did you get psycotty and how much was it??????????????
I have the man looking for one for me right now
