would power be affected with or without the elbow. its the regular engine(not sure if they had a ho that year) manual transmission.

The extra boost from the elbow would help a little. It would also cut down on smoke from the extra fuel added. Your '99 has a rubber line to the wastegate. I pinched mine off. I didn't use the elbow. You could get a brass fitting yourself and make an elbow. If all you are running is the EZ, you don't really need the wastegate to open, you won't be able to build much more than 30 psi boost anyway.

don't run the elbow...

i don't run the elbow with mine... i did for a while but my EGT's were out of sight. i could make 44 psi of boost but the truck had no top end... above about 2200 rpm it didn't make any power and wouldn't rev real well. i think this was because the truck was running way to lean... (to much air, not enough fuel). i put the stock elbow back in and got all kinds of power and top end back and lowered my EGT's by about 400 degrees. there is only very minimal smoke at high RPM.

Time in grade is one of the things I left in the service... ... . It has it's place, but is not always correct.

jkern, your result is the polar opposite of what i have personally seen and what has been reported by others on this board. Not sure what the reason would be.

Back to the topic, peak power will be affected very little with or without the elbow. EGT will be affected. WITH the elbow even towing you will have one heck of a time hitting 1100 pre, WITHOUT you will be able to hit 1300 fairly quickly. It would not bother me to run the EZ without the elbow at all, unless towing. If you tow you need the elbow, or you will have to drive by the pyrometer. Empty it really won't matter. Add some injectors and this will change.

i agree...

... that my experience was 180 degrees out of phase with everybody elses, that is why i bring up the subject. i am still looking for answers/clues what happened to me. i have been able to successfully repeat the conditions and results as well. the only way i can explain it is the truck running to lean, which would explain the hot engine and lack of power. if anyone has any ideas, don't hesitate to interject... i am always open to suggesstion!! i have called the manufacture and have tried many different elbows that they have sent me all with the same results. so i just leave the stock elbow in place, cause the truck runs great with it, and EGTs are ok as well.

just my experience

Jeremy, a lean diesel runs COLD, not hot. A rich condition is where heat comes from in a diesel. Excess air is what keeps the stock truck with the EZ and elbow from going over 1100. I would be interested in hearing the rest of the info that you have and about the testing you have done.

Jeremy,

Have you thought of having your engine looked at by a Diesel performance shop in your area? or other TDR members?

44 psi of boost with just a box? sounds a little too high.

No elbow

With my old truck I had a valve on the waste gate hose, stock or completely closed off. I had DD 1 and a comp box. I ran around with the box on stage one or off with the waste gate open. If I planned to go higher than stage one I'd open the hood and close the valve.

I hated the way the truck sounded with an elbow or a disabled waste gate with low fueling, it didn't seem happy. The ez won't make your egt any higher, maybe a bit lower. I don't see the point in putting more air in if it don't need it, your just raising cylinder pressure. Try with and without the elbow, with a stop watch, from 1500 to 3000 rpm with a five speed in 4th or a six speed in 5th, you will be faster without the elbow.

My $. 02, for what it's worth. ;)

i see your point about why a diesel should run colder when it is lean. i was simply applying gas engine rules. like i said i am looking for answers myself. i don't know if i had said this before, it is a JVD box. the box itself seems to work great, but the totally occluded elbow that came with it did what i explained in previous posts. my brother has a PE COMP on an ETH and his is fine... like everyone elses. not that you guys would know this, but it is just my luck to be the only one different:rolleyes:

boost elbow

I bought my power edge off of an individual that didn'thave the boost elbow and he said it wouldnt matter. Am I missing any power by not having it? What does one look like and could I make it if I had to? Thanks... ... ... .
