Is it common to have lots of black smoke a the lower end with this setup? I see about 24 max boost. Have 13. 5 at idle, 11-12 cruse,8 WOT fuel pressure. Stock injectors. At WOT the smoke goes away.

Mike, it depends which setting you have the EZ on and how much boost you have. The three settings add fuel at different boost levels. Also do you have a boost fooler. I consistently get 30-34 lbs. boost with my EZ. I have my EZ set on level 3 which provides fuel sooner than the others. If I give it too much accelerator before the boost builds, I will get a small cloud of black smoke. Hope this helps.

Not enough boost

Did you install the boost elbow? If you did and you're only getting 24psi, then you've probably got a boost leak. Check all them booties. Piers sells HD booties to replace the OEM stuff.

On the aggressive (early fuel) setting you're going to have smoke before boost. But with an EZ and stock injectors it should clear up really quickly.

To quickly find boost leaks: Pull the air cleaner and your boost gauge line. Have somebody hold a coffee lid or something on the front of the turbo, blow 30psi of compressed air into the boost fitting hole. Listen for phhhhhhhhhhhht. :p

You might stick a potato in the exhaust too, for the air that's going to run through open valves.

Sounds like you've got an Auto, since I don't know S--- about autos I will guess.

I believe you have a hardlined waste gate and need to use some type of device (turnbuckle) to hold your waste gate. Otherwise use an elbow.

I do have the elbow installed. And all booties are tight and look good. What boost should I see? Could the wastegate be sticking? What is the stock max boost?

Boost

My truck would make 21-22# boost before I added the box/elbow. I don't remember exactly what it would do on level 1 (same as EZ), but I'm sure it was close to 30#. I do remember that it would make 40+ on level 5--which is too much.

You'll make more boost with a heavier load on the engine. So use a hill or heavy trailer for testing.

Wastegate. Unhook the elbow and blow compressed air into the actuator. Regulate the air and see when the gate opens. I wouldn't apply more than 30-40 psi to the actuator--that much shouldn't be necessary. This won't clean it, but will let you see it function.

And clean/test or replace the IAT sensor. You can "view" what it is doing with an OBDII deal.

Back to the original question--you should have a PUFF of smoke, if you punch it with little or no boost. After 10#, it should clear out.

I have a 2000 Auto 4x4 with a EZ and I get about 28 PSI WOT on the highway. I see black smoke when I stomp the stupid pedal with no boost but, as said before after about 10 PSI of boost, the smoke is gone - this is with #2 diesel... I haven't noticed nearly as much smoke (or potential to make smoke) with winter fuel. Also, my truck launches noticeably harder with about 3/4 throttle than it does WOT from a stand still (with less smoke also. )
